Sleep position help!!
While in the hospital they told me I needed to sleep at 30 degrees they said I could sl3ep on my side but have to be at 30 degrees. Surgery was monday, so 4 days post op, I have been trying to sleep elevated on pillows on the couch and can only sleep for an hour or 2 and wake up with a sore bum and terrible back pain. Is it safe to lay in bed on my side? I had problems with my oxygen dropping at the hospital when I'd sleep but have always had that problem and I use my cpap. I continue to work on my insensitive sperometer daily. Please help!!

Many sleep in a recliner the first few days, but I slept in a bed. Four things helped: 1) wearing an abdominal velcro binder around my middle to aid in feeling secure with movement 2) lots of pillows 3) family extending a helping hand when going from laying to sitting 4) sugarfree adult-strength liquid Tylenol
I didn't have a recliner, but slept half sitting up on our sectional the first few days. But I also wasn't advised to sleep on my side, so I can't say really.
when I moved to a bed though, I pretty much built a reclining pillow fort around me and under me, to keep me in whichever position and prevent me from rolling in my sleep.
good luck, it's a short phase and soon, like me, you'll be struggling to remember what it was you did those early days!

Most people sleep flat right from the beginning, so if you are comfortable, you should be fine.

Even now, when I sleep on my back, I need a pillow or a roll under my knees. The same pillow goes between my knees when I sleep on my side, while I had another- king size, or body pillow to "hug" . Initially - when on a bed- I slept with my head elevated- creating slight angle, like in a zero-gravity- position. They make chairs like that.
I had to get padding for my mattress. On my side of the bed- there is an extra foam under the mattress pad for my back and bum. "Whatever works".
First 2-3 weeks I want uncomfortable to sleep on my side. It hurt.

I had to stay in Toronto for a week after surgery, and the place I rented had no recliner so I bought some giant pillows and propped myself up on them and slept sitting up. I had the back and bum pain too, and just kept shifting positions. I couldn't lie on my side, personally; it was just too painful.
Once I got home, I had a big wedge pillow that my Mom had used after her surgery. I am a side sleeper too and not being able to sleep on my side drove me crazy, so I sort of built a fort of pillows all around me so I could lean a bit to one side to sleep and still have pillows all around and beneath me to support my abdomen. I'm not explaining it right; sorry, but try to build up your pillows around you in a way to take the pressure off. A pillow under the knees can help reduce some of the back and bum pain. I also bought a cooling seat cushion to sit on, which helped.
Hang in; this stage will pass quickly.

I use a CPAP too, and when I got home I would sleep partly on my side, using pillows and/or a folded blanket to prop me at a 45° angle, I didn't prep my self up as much. I used a binder to hold ice packs on the larger abdominal incision where I still had some pain, while I slept at night.

They didn't give me any instructions on sleeping. I naturally rolled onto my side even while in the hospital. (Normally I'm a stomach sleeper). Woke up this morning partially on my stomach!!! A little sore, but I don't seem to notice any huge issues. No bleeding, etc.
I also had issues with oxygen and now have oxygen pumped into my cpap for 2 weeks until they repeat a sleep study. Unfortunately, haven't used it regularly because my husband said there's no way he can sleep with the horrible noise it makes. I offered to move downstairs but he said it's just as bad since he can hear it upstairs. (I had no idea that a person could sleep through blaring tv program but can't sleep with an O2 pump!)
