Gaining weight on clear liquid diet

Started all clear liquids 8/5 for pre-op surgery and am still on liquid diet today 8/13. How could I be gaining with only water and protein drink? I have gained 10 pounds!

Are you drinking any Gatorade or sports drinks? They have high sodium and could be causing you to retain water.

Only water and 2 protein drinks. Premier protein. 11 oz bottle. 120 calories, nothing else

How much water are you getting in a day? If you're retaining water, increasing your ounces (I like to be at 100+) and getting some exercise is usually what helps me "release" water retention. If you are a lot of carbs before beginning the liquid diet, your body may still be holding on to the water needed to process carbs.

Did your surgeon give you specific liquids to drink?

If all you have had are 2 protein drinks and water for 8 days, and you are up 10 pounds, then your scale is broken.

Nope, scale not broken. It is true. So had to see PCP today. I weighed the same on their scale. I knew there would be sceptics on the forum that would say my scale is broken or I have cheated.

I have low blood pressure and am on a blood pressure pill so have to stop that pill until doc says. Not retaining water. Heart and lungs ok. Nothing to worry about I was told. Very unusual.

Weight should start coming down. Still on clear liquid diet. It has been 10 days of water and protein drinks and I am ready for applesauce and cream of wheat. I see my surgeon tomorrow, I have not cheated even one bit. I went in at 187. Two days home I weighed 198.5 Today I am 192. So at 5 lb gain now. I thought after 10 days of clear liquids I would have lost some. will see what the scale says yesterday.

Just some advice, and I'm no vet, but I'd skip the cream of wheat and applesauce when it's time for mushies. They offer very little nutritional value and you'll need protein. Try yogurt (Dannon Greek Light and Fit is a favorite, lower sugar/carbs and higher protein), cottage cheese (blended if required) and even ricotta :)

good luck with your surgery, and come check out the daily "what's on your menu" thread (right here in the RNY forum). It's a great way to meet people, and see what everyone is eating at different stages
