G'afternoon, All!

I had physical therapy this morning and then one of my film groups immediately after. I was thinking of running some errands this afternoon, but it's rainy and gloomy and none of the errands are critical, so I think I'll just stay home and read. Or nap. Or maybe make some protein muffins.

I have a third cousin whom I've never met who lives in California (our great grandmothers were sisters back in what is now Romania (at the time it was part of Austria-Hungary). We "met" via DNA testing and have been Facebook friends ever since. Anyway, I found out last night that her daughter just accepted a job in Madison (where I live), so I told her to please give her daughter my email address and phone number - we can be her home away from home! (and at minimum, I want to meet her!). And the really weird thing is that her OTHER daughter will be moving to Reno to do her residency in psychiatry - and my sister lives in Reno! So weird. Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting the one bound for Madison! (wouldn't our great grandmothers be weirded out that their respective great granddaughters would meet up over 100 years later in a country thousands of miles away??)

QOTD: I almost never cry, at movies or otherwise, but I did shed a few tears at the end of an Irish film called "Nowhere Special" that I watched for one of my film groups a few weeks ago. It wasn't one of those movies that was intentionally trying to manipulate my emotions (which ticks me off..) - it was genuinely a sad movie. Everyone at the discussion group had the same reaction.

B: plain Greek yogurt with a sliced kiwi, coffee with half & half

MS: I had a rugelach and a mini scone at the film group meeting (I hate it when people bring food! It's hard for me to resist!)

L: protein shake

AS: probably yogurt and something crunchy like Skinny Pop

D: broccoli cheese soup - not sure what else

Have a great day, everyone!

Hi All -

should be a nice day today - high 60s/low 70s. Zero chance of rain this morning - 20% later on this afternoon, so I'll go out biking some time today. I ate way too much over the weekend and am feeling really bloated and awful, so I'll be sticking to a plan today and getting some good exercise to boot. I need to really stick to the plan regularly because at 10 years out (it'll be 10 years on June 3, so next week!), I'm finding myself straying more and more often. MUST STOP.

QOTD: we met up with some of my cousins in downtown Chicago on Sunday. At the last minute we decided to spend the night at a hotel that was on the way home since day tripping down there is definitely do-able but a bit exhausting. I'm glad we did. It was nice staying at a hotel and we had a leisurely trip back. One of the cousins we met up with (actually a second cousin) said there's a family funeral in Milwaukee on Friday. I had no idea I had relatives in Milwaukee. The woman who died would have been my father's second cousin. Julie (Chicago cousin) suggested I go to the funeral - she'll be there, and I'll be able to meet more of our relatives, she said. I feel kind of funny going to funeral for some relative I never knew existed to meet more relatives whom I also never knew existed - but I don't know - it could be interesting. Plus it's only an hour away, and I have no plans for Friday, and Julie will be there, so....???

B: plain Greek yogurt with blackberry compote, coffee with half & half

L: protein/grain bowl

S: Greek yogurt - and maybe carrot sticks with black bean dip

D: salmon filet and some kind of vegetable

now hopefully I'll stick to this plan!!!!

have a great day, everyone!

Hi All!

I really do need to start coming back here regularly. My weight is up a bit, and I need to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control.

Greg is retiring at the end of May, and I've got to turn my Medicare stuff into the state's personnel office since I go on Medicare in August. With both of these situations, our health care will be changing (the payment for Greg's, who's a few years younger than me, will be coming from a different source starting in June - and it'll change again in August since Medicare will become my primary payee, which will lower our premiums, but complicate things a bit - at least on our end - but I think this will work out fine).

QOTD: I don't mind painting. I used to like doing minor electrical things (like hanging new fixtures and replacing outlets), but after sparks flew out of the wall when I was trying to switch out a bathroom fixture once a few years ago, Greg forbade me to undertake any more electrical projects, even minor ones.

here's what I had today:

B: plain skyr with homemade blackberry compote (cooked down with lime and artificial sweetener), thin slice of homemade wheat toast with about 2 t of mixed nut butter

L: protein muffin with whipped cream cheese

AS: Skinny Pop popcorn (6 cups of it - whoops)

D: thinking about a salmon fillet and broccoli. (I'm already drinking a glass of wine, which unfortunately is something I think about every day, but I'm forcing myself to just have one about 2-3x a week and not every day. I've got an addictive personality, so I need to NOT get too used to this!!)

hope everyone had a great day!!

P.S. forgot to add that I attended a cardio/strength class at my gym - but virtually (it's cold and rainy out!). Twenty minutes of low-impact cardio and 25 minutes of strength training. I do enough cardio on my own, but not strength training - so this will be a good way to get back into it, since it's pretty light. They have this class 3x a week..

Mornin' All!

I really need to get back into this - have been eating too much lately and I need to get back control. I was hoping I'd get a metabolism boost after my hip replacement surgery (seven weeks ago), and I probably did, but between inactivity the first three or so weeks, and too many calories given the inactivity, I did not lose any weight. Boo. (at least I didn't gain, but still, I should have taken advantage of the boost!)

I think I was still regularly posting back in January when we moved my mom into assisted living. She loves the place, thankfully. Loves the apartment, has a group of friends she regularly eats with, and they have tons of activities, and she goes to lots of them! Whew. Such a relief. I'm going over there later this morning to give her a pill (she's really bad with dates and time, so when she gets some prescription, I or someone on the nursing staff really needs to administer it. If it's just for a day or two (like this one), I normally do it since she lives pretty close to me). Then I'm taking her to a doctor's appt this afternoon - and another one tomorrow. They do have a driver at her place who can take them to appts, but her memory isn't the best and she often can't answer questions the doctor asks - or she gives them wrong information. So it's better if I take her and go into the exam room with her.

QOTD: well, I've had a ton of plastic surgery, but I never had my thighs done because they're not awful, and unless I'm in a swimsuit (water fitness classes are my primary exercise in the winter), no one would notice - but I don't like looking at them. At one time I would have added my right hip, but the surgeon fixed it!

B: Greek yogurt with diced mango, toast on whole grain/seed bread with light butter and jam

L: I'll probably have lunch at my mom's place or we'll stop somewhere on our way to the doctor's office

D: either a protein bowl (lentils, sweet potatoes, 1/4 an avocado, cottage cheese, hot honey) or a tuna/chickpea salad sandwich with salad or fruit

I usually have snacks (unfortunately..that is my downfall - esp late afternoon), but I won't be home for that today. Might take a protein bar with me so I don't maw at dinner (or else eat a bigger than normal lunch so I won't be hungry until dinner time...)

have a great day, everyone!

Mornin' All!

we're taking my brother back to the airport this morning. I'm bussing back because Greg has to go to work afterward. I was planning to get off the bus downtown or on campus and walk around a bit before hopping back on the bus and heading back home, but it's supposed to start raining around 11:00 and rain all day, so..maybe not. I'll probably just take the bus all the way back home (haven't been on our new and improved route beyond downtown yet - it's fabulous that we can now get all the way to the airport on our neighborhood bus line (no bus changes involved!))

QOTD: I'll have to think about this. The only thing that I can think of now is some name that's not a legal name + a nickname. In other words, I'd want my legal name to be the same as what I'm actually called. My legal name is Patricia, which I never use, and I cringe every time someone calls me "Pat". Not that "Pat" is a terrible name, but it's NOT my name, and I get really tired of correcting people. I'd also have to have a one-syllable first name since my last name is four syllables. Otherwise the complete name would be way too long. I'll have to give this some thought and circle back.

B: plain skyr with blueberry/lime compote, thin slice of Danish rye bread with light whipped butter and cherry butter, coffee with half & half

L: either veggie chili or a small grain bowl

S: yogurt bark and/or Lesser Evil popcorn

D: we have leftover pizza but I may do something else. I'm not a huge fan of leftover pizza. Maybe whatever I don't eat for lunch I'll eat for dinner

have a great day, everyone!

Hi All -

I do check in here and read postings occasionally, but I think I need to get back into it. It's been a crazy few months. We had to move my mom into assisted living (her dementia was getting worse, and she needed more help (I'd hired people to come in an hour or two every morning - which worked for a while, but as of last fall, she needed more support)). Then I was supposed to have my right hip replaced last December, but it had to be rescheduled twice because of another medical issue I had that had to be resolved before he'd do the surgery. And then we lost two of our cats - eight days apart. But now I've finally had my hip surgery (and am doing great!), and spring is here (well - almost - it's still pretty cool today), so things are looking up!

I'm hoping I'll drop a couple of pounds because it's common to have a slight metabolism boost after having a major surgery (your body expends a lot of energy healing itself). I haven't been on the scale yet, though. Weight loss is so slow these days that I'd be disappointed if I've just lost half a pound, which is probably realistic. But we'll see. I'm hoping, too, that with this new and improved hip, I'll be a lot more active.

I've been pretty good with eating since having the surgery (three weeks ago), but I just downed a bunch of chocolate. I was thinking we're going out for pizza tonight (my niece's boyfriend's b-day), so I'm going to blow it anyway, so what the hell? I'll just eat this chocolate. This is thinking I used to have before RNY. Hopefully these thought will be out of my system after today. If my metabolism is in fact higher than normal right now, I'd better take full advantage of that, because that little boost doesn't last forever.

QOTD: the only thing I know I'm allergic to - or at least react to - is some kind of adhesive they use in surgeries. It was horrible during my arm/breast lift. I thought I would die from itching. The surgeon put me on prednisone for ten days since there's no way he could have removed the surgical tape the day after my surgery. It's in my MyChart that I'm allergic to surgical tape - and I told the hip surgeon as well as his PA about it, and they said they'd use a type of tape that people tolerate well, but guess what? Hives the next day. At least it wasn't itchy and they were gone after a couple days, so it was an improvement. But still..

B: plain skyr with blueberry/lime compote, coffee with half & half

S: iced latte made with SF syrup, Salvadoran quesadilla (my brother's in town - he wanted to go to this Salvadoran coffee shop near my house)

L: small "grain bowl" - roasted sweet potatoes, lentils seasoned with taco seasoning, 1 T avocado, cottage cheese, tahini, hot honey

S: Lesser Evil popcorn, way too much chocolate

D: 1-2 pieces of pizza

It's late in the day, so hopefully everyone had a great one!

Topic: RE: Finally Friday's Menu

Hi All!

I should probably start posting regularly again. My weight is up (probably due to holiday (over)eating and not getting as much exercise because - winter. I need to get it all back under control before it really gets out of hand.

we're moving my mom to a new facility on Monday (she's been living in a senior independent living community for the last 10 years, but she'll be moving to an assisted living community because she needs more support now - plus she was diagnosed with dementia last month (we'd been suspecting it since last spring) so I wanted her in a place that has a memory care unit, too. They can usually take care of people with mild or moderate dementia in their assisted living apts, but once it gets severe - or if they're an escape/wandering risk - they move them over to the memory care unit. Easier and less traumatic (for her) to move her now than wait until her dementia gets really bad. So I spent a lot of time looking for places for her and then getting things packed up and ready for her to move, since she can't do much on her own any more. Everything seems like such a chore - even changing your address is a PITA. It'll probably take another couple of weeks to get her settled in the new place and closed out of the old one (cleaning, storing some things she no longer has room for - and getting rid of some of her furniture), but once that's all over, it'll be a huge relief. I've also dealt with some health issues with my ancient cat (he's almost 20), including a near-death period when I thought we'd have to put him down, but he's improved since then and is stable - for now at least. I've also had to have my hip replacement surgery rescheduled twice because of another health issue that had to be resolved before the surgeon would do the surgery. but it's now scheduled for March 17th. Hopefully third time's a charm! Might be better anyway since I was originally supposed to go in December (which would have made my mom's move in early January next to impossible), and the second time it was supposed to be Jan 27 (risk of bad weather), so this new date may be better anyway.

ok - sorry to go on and on - and those of you whom I'm FB friends with have heard most of this stuff - but I figured I'd update the rest of you..

QOTD: I rarely eat meat anymore - my protein comes from dairy, soy, and beans mostly. And protein shakes (or other protein-infused things like protein ice cream). When I do eat meat it's usually chicken or fish. I don't like the taste of beef anymore...been away from it for too long, I guess...

B: plain skyr topped with a few pieces of cooked apple and a couple tablespoons of homemade (and SF) apple butter

S: protein shake and three cups of Lesser Evil popcorn

L: one of my film groups is meeting at a Chinese restaurant today. I'm planning to order hot & sour soup and a veggie spring roll

S: I hope nothing since I'm eating two meals out today - but if I'm really hungry, maybe a L&F yogurt with a spoonful of tahini mixed in

D: a few of us are meeting at a friend's for game night (Rummikub or Euchre). Someone is bringing black bean soup, and I made some cornbread, which I hope will be gone by the end of the night (and not all eaten by me! I'm planning on only eating one piece). I hope others don't bring a bunch of sweet treats because I just started reining in my eating within the last week or so - I don't want to blow it this soon since I've been on a roll!

hope everyone is doing well!

G'Afternoon!

my life seems like a whirlwind lately - and it won't let up for a while, unfortunately. I have my hip replacement surgery on Dec 18th and am looking forward to spending several days in my pajamas just reading and watching movies (and getting up to walk around the house several times a day, I'm guessing - they want you using the thing right away). Before then, in addition to everything else, I have to get this house in order. We'll have a cat sitter coming in every day to help DH with the cats. All four get meds, but I may only be able to handle one of them for a while after my surgery (he's easy-peasy - never puts up a fight). Two of them can be a huge struggle to medicate and I'm not sure I'll be able to do it will standing with a walker - and a third is good with meds in general but gets subcutaneous fluids, and I'm not sure I'll be able to do the fluids for the first couple of weeks. So at least we'll have help - but I don't want her to see this messy house!

QOTD: there will only be three of us this year (me, DH, and my mom), so I'm getting take-out dinners for us. So I won't be making anything. I'm actually kind of relieved - making Thanksgiving dinner is a lot of work!

coffee with half & half

rye crumpet with light butter and jam

plain skyr topped with cooked, diced apples in homemade SF apple butter

protein shake

Lesser Evil popcorn

probably taco filling with tomatoes, plain Greek yogurt, and salsa for dinner

have a great rest of your day!

Mornin' All!

I need to start posting again - it does help, plus I don't want our thread to die out!! I'm glad to see some people still posting. This does seem to happen once in a while when there's a change in "thread starters" - but fortunately, it's usually temporary. Thanks for starting us up the last few days, Lady Godiva!!

not much going on this week, which is good because between a few really busy ones and the recent election, I need the break. I have class today, but that's it. I'm going to try to plow through some of the book I'm supposed to read for my book discussion group meeting next week. I'm caught up with classes except for the one I decided to quit going to - but since I've left it, there's no need to get caught up!

QOTD: we won't have any leftovers this year since there will just be three of us, so I ordered take-out meals. I'll just put a message on our neighborhood Facebook page about turkey carcasses. I like to make (and freeze) turkey stock after Thanksgiving, so I'll be in the market for a carcass or two. I usually get responses - some people otherwise just throw them out. As far as past Thanksgivings, I've usually frozen sweet potato casserole. I've also frozen stuffing, but unlike the sweet potatoes, it's not that great after thawing and re-heating. And we usually finish up eating turkey after three or four days, so we've never had to freeze that.

coffee with half & half

plain skyr with either blueberry or apple compote

vegetarian chili or a Mexican-style salad

protein shake or protein muffin

whatever I don't have for lunch, I'll have for dinner

have a great day, everyone!

Mornin' All!

one of my film discussion groups meets today at noon over lunch. I just checked the menu since this is a new place for us. The soup and salad combo it is! Not much else going on, but it'll be a busy weekend, so I'm going to use today to get caught up with some things - class readings and a few things I've been procrastinating about and just need to tie up and be done with them. Weekend plans include a university women's volleyball game on Saturday and a play on Sunday (going with a new friend)

didn't do the QOTD (didn't login until late yesterday) but a few of those items are true of me (not all, though..) (based on what I WOULD have picked)

coffee with half & half

protein pancakes topped with plain skyr and diced/cooked apples in SF apple butter

soup (not sure what the soup of the day is there) and a side salad with dressing on the side

protein shake or Greek yogurt for a snack

Loma Linda taco filling (1/2 a pack) on salad greens topped with tomatoes, plain Greek yogurt, and salsa

ex: it's a beautiful day today, so if the wind speed is OK (under 15 mph), I'll bike - otherwise, I'll take a walk

have a great day, everyone!

Yesterday was a terrible day because of it. Feeling better today, but not looking forward to four more years of sleepless nights wondering what ridiculous or awful thing the grand Poobah is going to do next. But here we are again..

I really need to watch a film for tomorrow morning's film discussion group. I feel hopelessly behind on everything, but I need to do this.

eating has been OK lately, exercise not so much, but I did bike to class and back this afternoon because the weather was good for it. I"m glad I did it.

here's what I've eaten today:

coffee with half & half

protein pancakes topped with plain skyr and diced, cooked apples

iced latte made with 2% milk and SF syrup

Chobani yogurt - the 20 grams of protein kind

slice of Danish rye bread with butter and jam

way too much Lesser Evil popcorn

I need about 20 more grams of protein, so I'll have a shake or a thing of yogurt later tonight. Or I might make some protein ice cream and have some of that...

I'll try to be better about checking in from now on!!

Mornin' Weekenders!

I spent yesterday plowing through a book I had to read for a book discussion group that meets tomorrow morning. I need to get through another one in the next few days because I have a book review due (for a newsletter) on Nov 1 - cripes. On top of that, we went to a Homecoming bash (before the football game) at 4:00 PM yesterday - lots of food there, but I did OK - half a bratwurst, some mixed fruit, and about 1/4 cup of pasta salad. But once at the game - ugh. We had premium seats (thanks to the development director of the Athletics dept (we set up a scholarship for women's hockey in our trust recently - which explains how we managed to get the free tix to the box seats earlier this fall - and the premium seats last night). The premium seat section was attached to this "club" (you could see the game from the club - too - it was part of the stadium and had floor to ceiling windows overlooking the game) - all the free food you wanted. Tons of it. Including things like shrimp and crab legs! I blew it there. Six shrimp and about 1/4 c of roasted root vegetables (both of which were fine) - then I hit the dessert bar - 2 "gourmet" bar cookies and some apple crisp. Then later went back and had some Chex mix, about 2 oz of cheese, and some potato chips with French onion dip. I think that might have been it - but those desserts and Chex mix/potato chips pretty much killed me. Feeling it this morning. I've got two meals out this coming Thursday but I don't think anything else, so it's going to be super light eating most of this week.

QOTD: it's been so long I don't remember much, although I was obviously eating more than 3000 kcal a day, or I wouldn't have weighed well over 300 lbs. Even on my absolutely WORST days post-surgery (like Thanksgiving), I've topped out at about 2500 and felt like hell afterward. I can't believe I consistently ate a lot more than that before surgery - pretty much every day! Anyway, the couple things I do remember is my breakfast. Always a smoothie. Healthy, yes - but SO MANY CALORIES (at least the way I made them!). They would consist of a banana, a couple of peaches or a cup (at least) of melon, some berries, a bunch of plain Greek yogurt or half a chunk of tofu (for protein), and either milk or orange juice to get it going in the blender. So around 500 kcal there - plus the half & half in my coffee. Before I even walked out the door. We had a coffee shop on the first floor of the library I worked at, and I remember going downstairs several mornings a week around 10:00 to get another cup of coffee - with half & half - and a scone. So there's another 500-ish kcal. I usually brought leftovers for lunch. I must have had a snack in the afternoon, but I can't remember what. I did have a mini-fridge in my office where I kept things of yogurt and diet soda, so hopefully just that most days. I remember making microwave popcorn sometimes, though - and not the lighter variety. Dinner - I used to cook a lot more than I do now and I always made healthy things, but then, I always had two or three servings of whatever I made. So yea - just that right there is about a 3000 kcal day. And that doesn't even count the times we went out to eat - or the times I "overate" (compared to what I USUALLY ate...). When I went through my required six-month supervised diet before surgery, the dietitian had me eat 2300 kcal/day. That seemed like a really restrictive diet for me at the time. Do-able, but very restrictive. Now a 2300 kcal day would be a major binge day for me.

coffee with half & half

protein pumpkin muffin and a thing of Activia yogurt

not sure about the rest of the day because I'll be meeting up with my sister at some point (still haven't seen her yet, and she's been here since Thursday night), but after yesterday's blow-out, I will be eating very lightly today!! Maybe something like soup if we end up going out..

have a great day, everyone!

I was thinking this would definitely make sense with an HSA, because I think you still have access to the funds you've saved in there even after you're no longer working. For an FSA, I don't think having an extra $1000 would make sense (unless you're in a really high tax bracket, I guess...). Although I could probably come out ahead at some lower level - I'll see if I can figure it out. Our tax bracket should be higher than usual this year since DH had some capital gains when our financial guy re-tooled the account he inherited from his mother - making it more appropriate for someone his age (rather than her age...) - I'll check the IRS web site and see if can guesstimate what our new bracket will be (well, if we have a new one - I don't know the ranges right off hand - but it's posted somewhere)

I've been less funny about it in the past because we could carry over $500 from year to year (I think it went up to $600 for 2025) - so I really didn't worry about not using it all. But with DH planning to retire this year, we can't carry any over - whatever we don't use by the end of 2025 is forfeited. My thought was that if it was under $100, I wouldn't really care - but if it was several hundred, that would be a lot. I'll calculate it out, though, now that you mention it. If the tax savings is more than what we'd lose if we had to forfeit the balance at the end of the year, it would be worth it...thanks for mentioning that - I hadn't thought of it that way.

I always make my own - from recipes I find on the internet. Here's the one I used for the channa dal (I've also made makhani dal several times (made with black lentils - and has cream in it (although I use half & half instead))
