Topic: RE: MUSIC TEACHERS???????
I'm kind of late on this but I'll post anyway!
I used to teach music - 4 choirs and a piano class, high school level. It was my first teaching job, and boy howdy, was I not ready. I don't play piano... I play keys, like in rock bands... but no piano!
I had the son of the local university's head of choral conducting in my show choir... he was a miserable man, and didn't approve of my music school's choral conductor (Azusa Pacific University in the Gary Bonner era)
Anyway, I teach computer stuff now - digital imaging, web publishing and computer applications (MS Office) and like it a lot better. I play bass and sing backup in a busy cover band and really love performing... I also play for my worship team at my church.
I don't miss "teaching" music, though I'm having a blast teaching my 11 year old son electric bass and guitar!

I direct a childrens choir in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. I was a classroom teacher(Choir, band, strings all levels) over the last 22 years.
Now I am a stay at home mommy with Jacob,5, and DeeDee, 3.
Don't miss it one bit. Totally burned out. It's nice to take a break.
I don't know what I will do when the kids are both in school, but I may try something new. I always said If I was burned out I would leave before I did damage to the kids; not stay until retirement. Just had my surgery on 1/19/05. I feel great. I am twenty lbs. lighter!

Jenny, I have a friend that used to teachin Tazewell. Jackie Yates. However, it's been a long time ago. She has two sisters who did teach in VA but are now retired.
Topic: RE: Do you tell your kids?
This is the sort of thing I am afraid of. That is why I am trying for summer break for the operation. Also, I will have achance to get the food part down and the mood swings sort of under control before I have to face them. Most of my fellow teachers are supportive, even one who thinks I should not do something so drastic. I know by the tie school starts back though, providing I am able to schedule it for summer, providing I get approved, they will all want to know. delimmas

Okay, here is my dilemma. I am a high school teacher and do not mean to send obnoxious but I am a very popular high school student. Meaning my former students come to see me to talk to me and hang out with me, students hang out with me during their lunch, students want me to sponsor and attend their activities. I am truly saying this for a reason...Reason being...my department chairperson thinks that I should not tell my students the exact nature of my surgery because she is afraid that some of my students will follow suit in later life because I am popular and well-liked. As a sidebar, this woman, who is a great person, is terrified of me having the surgery and tries to change my mind at every turn. Well, actually, she had stopped because she realized that I was going to have the surgery regardless.
Do you feel that I would be doing my students a disservice if I tell them about the true nature of my surgery?
I love my kids and my kids and myself had separation anxiety when I went on a cruise for a week; I am going to be out for seven weeks post-surgery. I miss my babies already.
I have three student aides who have been told the truth and they have my number to call if the sub is out of control. I just don't know what to do.

i didn't tell the kids anything before surgery nor immediately after. they really didn't seem to notice the weight loss all that much until after christmas break (i had my surgery on 9/1/04). finally, after one of my 5th graders asked what was going on with me and losing so much weight, i decided to tell my older students (just the 4th/5th graders - i'm a music teacher, prek-5th). the classroom teachers were very supportive of me talking to the students about the surgery and using my experience as a 'teachable moment'. i showed them online diagrams of what exactly the surgeon did to me, discussed my reasons for having the surgery, and how my life has changed. kids are so funny though - in each class i had someone ask 'does that mean you can't eat cotton candy anymore?'. i'm really glad i told them. now its like a weekly thing. they want to know how much i have lost, how my last check-up went, etc. it was quite rewarding i must say!

Topic: RE: Summer 2004
Dear Christie,
I started teaching in 1979 and had the WLS on August 2nd, 2004. It had been scheduled for July 26th, 2004 originally. I was glad that I had the surgery in the summertime. It was good to be able to be off from work for the surgery and to recuperate also.
I believe that all teachers should have it done during the summer break to give enough time to have it done and to begin the new life style change. This way there are no distractions from what you have to do and you have plenty of time to do it in.
I hope that you are much healthier now that your 8 month anniversary is approaching. We are both now on the losing side. Continued good luck and positive changes!!!
Sincerely, Annette (-80 lbs.)
Topic: RE: Just got Approval... what about letting work know???
Dear Gene,
Congratulations on getting your approval for WLS!!!
About letting work know about the surgery, I think that telling them should not worry you that much. Your primary concern will be on recovery from the WLS and also on the knowledge that you will be making a major life style change for the rest of your life. Maybe it would be best to have the surgery during the summertime so that you will have plenty of time off from work to get it done and recuperate. Then you won't have to tell work if you don't want to. Personally, I would not tell work just yet. Hold off with telling anyone at your job now. Then when you really feel comfortable with telling others about the WLS then you can come to the conclusion of whether you want to say anything or not.
I hope that I have been some help to you.
Lots of luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery. Soon you will be on the losiing side!!!
Sincerely yours, Annette
Topic: MUSIC TEACHERS???????
Hey are there any music teachers out there?
I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade chorus, show choir and dance.
Too much fun.
And, a ton more fun without a ton of weight on!
I am more positive and enthusiastic!!
