Nurse and Doctor Stories Needed
I am going to be speaking to a nursing class about the surgery that I had. I am also going to take the opportunity to try to "raise their consciousness" about the problems that obese people have with doctors and nurses. I would appreciate any horror stories you would like to share.
As an example, I know someone who was ushered into the doctor's office by the nurse. The nurse left the office, leaving the door open. Then, in the patient's hearing, she asked another nurse, "So how am I supposed to weigh this elephant?"
You can post them here, or email me directly at [email protected] THANKS!!
Being a nurse myself, I want to thank you for doing this! There is so little compassion out there from healthcare workers. I would ask them to remember that obese people are human beings and that they have no idea what this person has been thru to try and lose the weight. Not to automatically assume that they do not care about their health because they have "let themselves go" attitude. They should be treated with the same compassion as a chemo patient with their own set of comorbidities.
Well, until today, no one had actually said anything nasty to my face, but it happened to me at my PCP appt. today. I had to get weighed and it came up 270. I had weighed on the 1st at Dr. Houston's at 282. I said, "Wow, that's 12 lbs difference. I wonder if I have lost some or if the scales are just off...", and the nurse just looks at me and says, "At your weight, does it really even matter?", and then just turned around and walked off! I was in shock!

You know what Susan, that is a testament to how much I just take because I never even thought of saying anything to my doc! Now I am even madder because I realize that I just let her get away with it. I think I am going to go see my doc and let him know what an insensitive person he has working for him. He has been my doctor for 22 years so he is used to me going off on him, LOL!

Hi - I'm really not stalking your posts, I'm just reading older ones, and this one popped out at me.
The person who was weighing you at your PCP's office was probably not a nurse. Many, many doc's offices hire medical assistants (MAs) in order to save money, and in TN call them nurses. There's no law against this as long as they don't claim to be RN or LPN. In other states, of course, this is quite illegal.
So, ask if she's really a licensed nurse. I've heard some really rotten advice, and been given instructions that were totally wrong, from medical assistants who think they're nurses.
Love
