You and your mum are in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with the poster who said that her blood sugars are not under control. It does sound like she's getting either too much insulin or some other med that lowers blood sugar. Blood sugar that low is very dangerous. Your brain lives on sugar only, so if the blood sugar is low, that's what puts her in that trance-like state. This is a medical emergency and she needs to see a doctor Now. Take her to an ER if she can't get in to see the doc who put her on the med. I am a nurse, and I don't often tell people to go to the ER, but I think it's appropriate in your mum's case. Love Dennie

Dennie, the weird thing is that the last few weeks her sugar has been so much better. I got angry and went downstairs and had my dad through out everything crappy and gave them a stern lecture and started checking them out all the time so it was better and then boom, just like that. I am going to go check on her in a minute again and tell my dad what you told me. Thanks so much!

Hi again. The way you described above, is *Exactly* the way your mother's blood sugars went wrong. Does she have a sliding scale for insulin coverage? If not, she should NOT be taking insulin unless it's with food. Insulin is nothing to mess around with - when I got out of nursing school, we didn't administer insulin without another nurse checking the order and the bottle and the syringe drawn up. You can't just guestimate what you think you should be taking. Even the "instant" insulin, (Humalog) takes some time to work in your system. High blood sugar, long-term, causes long-term problems. Low blood sugar is an immediate emergency. If your mother's overall blood sugars are not acceptable (and she needs to make sure she knows what the acceptable readings are!) then she needs to see her doc and the doc's diabetic instructor for a better plan. Taking more insulin in the middle of the night that's not immediately related to what's she's eating right then is not a plan. She should follow her diet and insulin instructions as near to the letter as she's able. If she's not having good results with that, then show the information to the doc or educator and have them come up with something that does work. I'm sorry if I come off as being all lecture-ey and stern, but but I worry about someone improvising with insulin! Love Dennie

Kym, I'm sorry to hear about your mom. That must be really tough on you and her, especially just before your surgery. I will keep you both in my prayers. Robin
