Does anyone do this....
Okay, i'm 6 months post op and I noticed that I have developed a bad habit. I have a bad habit of sometimes chewing food and then spitting it out. I don't like that full, stuffed feeling so I guess with certain things like meats or sandwiches I do this and stuff like Pizza. I only get thin crust pizza now and I can only eat 2 corner pieces and the rest I have to give away. So my question of the day is.... Has anyone else developed this habit?
I too have done that and still do. Not so much as just the taste of it, but more like if I swallow it, I'll throw up. I don't feel that full feeling until I go to have that last bite of something and then I start feeling queasy at the thought of it. I think everyone has at one point, spit something out after just the taste of something, or when getting full.
Always, Kathy

Sometimes I do it too.... recently I visited the chinese restaurant and got some beef out of the pepper steak... It was too tough so I spit it out. Then, on occasion, sometimes I will think I can do just one more bite... and after I get it in my mouth, I realize... NO I CAN'T. So I spit it out in my napkin. Its ok to do. Might make you feel or look a little funny but I'd rather spit it out than swallow and regret it later!
I haven't done that yet, since I am still on "smashed" foods and flakey fish. My PCP,even before I had the surgery, warned me about doing that a lot. He said that the chewing starts the digestive track and your stomach is triggered to produce gastric acids waiting for the food to "hit" and when the food doesn't hit the acids have nothing to digest and that is how ulcers get started. He said not to do it on an empty stomach. I remember just looking at him like, "OK." and.... But, I can see times where I would love a "taste" and I am tempted to just have a small bite and spit....but, then I hear the PCP's words come haunting thru my mind...."It is how ulcers get started." My PCP is very over protective and also suggested I stop drinking soda's in Jan. and my surgery wasn't until September. I gave them up at Lent and haven't returned to drinking them so, he really is just trying to stop issues before they start.
Did I miss something? I thought you meant when you are getting too full you might have to spit food out. I have never "tasted and chewed" food and then spit it out just to get the taste. I would just take a bite of something if I wanted it. But some people cant stop at just one bite so that would be an individual decision I guess. I think I misread the original text.
I hate to admit it but I have done that and I still do it. At first when I got out of the hospital I was having to cook for everyone and couldn't eat it. It would smell so good so I would put a bite in my mouth, chew the flavor out of it and then spit it out. I still do that to things like steak, pork, and roast beef. I know if I swallow it it will make me throw up. I can't handle most meats. I guess I should not be doing that but I do. Might explain why I do have an ulcer huh. But I have found that if I eat much of anything I vomit. Some days are good but then there are others that aren't. More bad days with eating than good. I just thought that if I chew the taste out it couldn't hurt me and I wouldn't vomit yet again.

Hey everyone..
Thanks for the great responses. Well I feel normal now that I know that i'm not the only one who does this. I don't do it with everything that I eat, only if I feel that i can't take in another bite or if I am eating something thick like a sandwich or something that may be too tough to break down. I'm just so paranoid about taking care of my pouch. I just like the taste of it but I know that I'm going to be so full if I take a bite of a thick sandwich. Its true discipline because before I had surgery I couldn't have said "no i'm not gonna swallow this bite". I would have eaten the whole thing and still wouldn't have been full. Now I am back in control and I can dictate what i'm going to eat and how much and be satisfied at the same time. I dont feel like i'm wasting food if I don't eat all of it anymore. Thats just a great feeling. I love this surgery!
Hi! Like Melinda said, a couple of times (maybe 2-3 times that I can remember) I have overeaten but would be eating something so good and just think, I can have one more bite and when I start chewing it, realize, nope that will not fit in my pouch so spit it in my napkin. You learn after two or three times where your limits are.
But, I can honestly say I have never done the taste and spit trick. My mom had RNY and she would do that. I chose not to. I think that if you are not supposed to eat it because it will make you sick, then you should not even put it in your mouth. If you "plan" to chew it up to get the taste and spit it out, then you might as well swallow it. That way if you do get sick, it will only happen once. You are giving into the control of the food. It is a mental thing that you think you need that taste. I would say to try and control those habits because you have to take control back. Eventually you will be further out from surgery and can eat those things without problems and will not have to spit it out and if you do not learn to control those types of habits now, it will be real hard when you can eat anything without any problems. I am further out now and can eat just about anything without problems so if I want something "bad" or "unhealthy" I will eat it because I do not believe that you can deny yourself certain foods for the rest of your life but I also know how often I do it and I have enough control not to let it happen much because I learned better habits and control the first several months after surgery.
I hope you are able to get over this bad habit but yes, I think you are normal. I think a lot of people do that "trick" but you have to know it is a trick and hopefully you can overcome it. Congrats on your weight loss and I wish you much more success.
