Well I went for a follow up with the nutritionist today at Vandy.  All in all it went good.  I am not getting in all my protien, and we talked about things I could do to help that.  She was very pleased when I told her about our next lunch bunch meeting and having a protien bar set up.  She also told me that I had lost 15% of the excess body fat that I was carry around.  I am also now down to 270 pounds, that is 33 pounds since surgery and a total of 95 pounds since April.

I am not sure what your nutritionist feels about protein products... but it is possible to get that protein in... You have to really plan for it...  and drink the shakes, etc...  Since you are so new, there is virtually no way for you to get it all in just from food.  As a matter of fact, I am 15 mos postop and there is still no way I can get it all from food... Unless I started eating as soon as I stepped my feet on the floor in the mornings, and ate all day long til I got back in bed...  I used to take my chicken breast with me and eat it in two portions... cause I could not eat all of it at once...  so my meals were very long...  I could not eat a chicken breast... only maybe 3 oz AT the very most... at one time...  Shakes saved my life.... Anyway, sounds like you are doing great on your weight loss...  Right now is vital for you to change your eating habits, and part of that is getting that protein in...  I was so sick when I got admitted to Centennial 2 1/2 mos after my surgery.  Dr. Houston said that 18 was considered very low, and my protein level during that hospital stay was only 11!  YES, ELEVEN!  As he stated, "it's in the basement!"  I stayed in the hospital 6 days... I was fed through an iv...  I had malnutrition because of the stricture and lack of protein...  No one ever wants to carry around an iv bag or be reliant on that to feed you...  So do I ever know about what protein and lack of can do...  I had lost all my energy, and when I got to the hospital that day, I was so sick.  I could not even hear the words eggs, turkey, chicken...  I smelled someone's food at lunch that day and almost threw up in a trash can...  I had to leave the office for 30 minutes for the smell to leave... and I overheard two coworkers talking about a recipe, and again almost threw up in the trash can...  I was so weak and one sick puppy...  Lack of protein. Don't mean to scare you to death, but really it is vital that you get started on it asap.  Not just you but all postops...  If you need help please ask cause there are plenty of protein gurus here on the board.  Someone like Paula or SusieQ can whip you up a smoothie or latte in no time flat...

Hi Melissa: Congrats to you......  33 pounds since surgery is a wonderful job.  And a total of 95 pounds means you have lost a small person.  You are no longer carrying around a small person.  I just wanted to tell you how great you are doing and to keep going......... Truly, Trina

Congratulations on 15%!!!  You rock!  We'll find something wonderful that you will enjoy drinking to get your protein up.  I actually enjoy my morning latte now.  Especially since I know that it has 20 grams of protein.  I have two or three a day and then the pressure is not so great.  Eating 40 grams of protein is quite do-able!

Big happy smile to you!

Freddie
