Protein Mix Question And Other Stuff

So, I had my nutrional evaluation today and it went good.  Apparently that was the last thing I had to do so they can submit to insurance but now I have a few questions.  Does protein powder have that "vitaminy" taste?  I don't do well with that.  I would assume it depends on the product and that some are better than others.  I've noticed some of you talk a lot about protein drinks that are kind of coffee influenced.  I guess I'm a little concerned about that because I'm much of a coffee drinker.  I could do something fruity easier.  Any suggestions?  And, is there somewhere I could get it locally versus ordering online?  I was looking over the Nectar product and it's looking better to me than some other options. Also, I wanted to know if any of you do liquid multivitamins and what you use.  I am not a good pill taker.  I have to force myself but I know it is a must going forward.  Apparently no more whole pills and again I don't do that vitamin taste well.  It's like instant gag reflex.   And, what's the best place to find the shaker cups? Let's see... what else. Thinking... thinking.  Well, maybe that's all for this time.  I'm sure I'll think of something else right after I post this.  Does memory improve after weight loss? LOL  Have a blessed week everyone!

The Nectar Fuzzy Navel is good. It has no real gritty after taste and no coffee flavor at all. You can  find it local at VItamin Shoppe. It is a light flavor so you might like it. I don't take liquid mulit vitamins but I know they are available so you can try and just use what works best for you. Sometimes you can get lucky and get the shaker cups with the Nectar at Vitamin shoppe they sometimes sell the protein and cup comes with it that how I got mine. Good luck and wishing you well.

First, Congrats on coming this far!  I would recommend you go to Bariatriceating.com.  They have a protein sample pack with over a dozen different kinds of protein.  I used it immediately after surgery to decide what I liked and didn't like.  Remember, your tastes will change after surgery!  You can get the New Whey liquid protein shots at Vitamin Shoppe.  They are fruit flavored and have 42 grams of protein.  At first, you will have to water them down quite a bit.  They are similiar to jello shooters without the booze.  I use them to make sugar free protein jello, substituting the cold water with the New Whey.  As far as vitamins, they are SOOOO important.  I thought the liquid ones were horrible.  I use Bariatric Advantage chewables.  Some say they are chalky, but they don't bother me at all.  At first, I tried to use chewable Flintstones, but wasn't getting enough from them.  Hope this helps.  Again, congrats on your journey!! Centrum makes a liquid its tolerable, but they also make a Chewable that taste like a Flinstone. My NUT says the Chewable is a little better then the liquid? Like Marilyn I ordered the sample pack from Bariatriceating.com made a chart and kept a running account on what tasted good rating 1-10. I know your taste might change but I chose to do my testing pre-op so I would at least have a idea on what to expect. I would not go out and by volume until post-op but it wouldn't hurt to have a little of what you like on hand.  Bob

Thanks so much!  Juanita, I've seen you all talk about that place before.  I need to go check it out but have to figure out where it is first.  Thank God for MapQuest.  The nutrionist just told me to be careful with liquid multivitamin because of sugars added to improve taste.  I'm just concerned about being able to get it down.  I don't like that "metal" taste.  And, yeah, I'm not trying to buy a whole bunch of anything at this point.  Just making sure I'm on a good track.  I know it's trial and error.  Being a Libra though, I'm an over analyzer.  So, I can't help it LOL But, I guess the point I was trying to make is that I don't think I'd really like something that is more like a thicker shake or coffee influenced.  However the more fruity thing I could do.  Something that would be good to just add to water. Ya'll are so good at this though.  Giving helpful information.  Keep it coming.  It helps ease my anxiety going through the steps up to surgery.

Not sure if you are familiar with Rivergate but there is a Vitamin Shoppe right across from Mall on Gallatin rd right next to IHOP. You could also check and see if you can get Nectar samples from bariatric eating. That way you can try different flavors and not pay money for one thing that you may not like.

Congrats on your accomplishments...  Things are going great.

Unfortunately, protein and protein powders are not my strong point.  I have always had issues with them but I try hard all the time to get over it...

A lot of posters on the board are very savvy about this topic because they learned so much from trial and error.  Maybe you can check out Melinda's website and I think Scott's too for lots of information about this.    You have gotten some great advice in this thread too.....I keep forgetting that you can get a sample pack from Bariatriceating.com....  (Note to self...  get the sample pack).... LOL

Hi. I'm 6 wks. out from my surgery and I couldn't handle my vitamins so I ordered Tropical Oasis liquid vitamins and Liquid Calcium. The multivitamin tastes awful to me right now so I still end up chewing Flinstone vitamins. I haven't tried the liquid calcium yet but I have the bariatric chewable ones that I take. I had about 2 weeks where I was having trouble drinking and eating but now I'm on anti-nausea meds and it helps so much. Good luck to you.

I also ordered samples for protein drinks from vitalady.com and I'm glad that I did.

I use the Nectar Carribean Cooler and Crystal Sky flavors.  The crystal sky tastes like fruit punch.  The carribean cooler is good by itself but I also like to mix it with Crystal Light Lemonade or CL Raspberry lemonade.  I also ordered the sample pack from bariatriceating.com.  I didn't find too many things in there that I really liked.  I'm 10 wks out and I'm still experimenting.  I haven't found too many kinds of protein that I like.  Thank God for the Nectar.  I did buy some Vanilla Ice Cream flavor by Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard from GNC.  I've been mixing it with 6-8 oz of Hoods Calorie Countdown milk, a frozen strawberry , a piece of frozen banana and some SF chocolate sauce.  Blend it in magic bullet and it's absolutely awesome!!!  Tastes like a banana split!!  I'm gonna try it next with some pineapple.

Right now I take vitamin pills from GNC but they are nasty tasting and way too big.  Will probably go back to the bariatric advantage chewables.  You can get the shaker cups at GNC also.

I don't know about anybody else, but my memory is just as bad now as it was!!  My husband makes fun of me all the time!!LOL

So much great information!  Thank you all.  I'm sure I'll get the hang of this eventually.  Maybe it's the "fear of the unkown".  But, once I actually mix a protein drink and get in the habit it'll be 2nd nature.  I'm so glad for OH and you all who know sooo much!
