Uh Oh... Protein Problem... Help!!!

So, when I went to the nutrionist before my pre-op labwork, she gave us protein samples.  I was so excited to try the Nectar (strawberry kiwi) because I've heard such good things.  So, tonight I opened the packet up and sniffed it and thought it smelled really really good.  I mixed it up with water and then let it sit for a few minutes to let the bubbles go down.  Then, I sniffed it.  Bad decision!  From just the smell I could feel the gag reflex.  So, I thought well maybe it's just the smell and it will taste better than it smells.  And yeah, the taste test didn't go so well.  I took another sip and it just turned my stomach.  Now, I'm super worried because I know this is going to be a must after surgery.  After 2 sips I'm sitting here with a queezy stomach.  I can't even fathom another drink of it.  Help!!!  I need suggestions to get over this quick since surgery is right around the corner.  I'm so bummed out right now because I can't get this down.

Most of the Nectar Fruity ones I have tried have that smell. I don't particularly care for them either. Since mom had her surgery she has me and dad on the protein band wagon. I go for more of the creamy type proteins. Those are pretty safe. Nectar makes the best Vanilla one I have had so far. Its Vanilla Bean Torte. I have heard however that the fruity ones make good jello and popsicles.

I agree with Ashlea, I do like the EAS Shakes Wal-Mart a pack of 4 for $6 something. LaBrada pretty good. I seem to like the pre mix better. C'ya Bob

It's ok that you dont like them now.  I would tell someone do not go buy much.  Mike bought about 20 bottles of Isopuke, I mean Isopure, before surgery to have them all on hand for after surgery.  He liked them a lot.  But after was an entirely different story!  He puked on them!  He left that whole entire stock of bottles in there until his nephew took them all.   Your tastes are MUCH different the moment you get off of the operating table.  What tastes wonderful to you right now, and not sweet, will seem to be the sweetest grossest stuff you ever did taste...  its so weird. Don't worry hon. We will fix you right up.  I will overnight you some samples if need be.  Send me your address on a pm and I will just go ahead an send em.  That way you can try a variety after your surgery.  And not waste a fortune!

Hi SweetMsRe.....     Did they give you any other samples besides Nectar....  I agree with most that you for sure do not want to stock up on a lot of protein stuff because what taste good to you now, may not after WLS......

I am further down the road but who would ever guessed that I can not eat a left over steak out of the fridge...   Makes me puke and gag.....  Unless it is straight off the grill I can't eat it......  I used to love to grab a left over ribeye out of the fridge and go to town.....  Not Anymore.....LOL...

They also had Unjury samples and I have a vanilla of that but honestly, after last night's yucky gross experience and puking this morning... I'm almost scared to try it.  Someone at work told me today that they can only drink protein if they "slam" it back and then I explained to them I won't have that option post op.  I think Melinda is going to get me taken care of though. But, all suggestions are appreciated.

Don't feel bad... I hate all the fruity Nectar powders too.  I can't understand how so many others can like it!  YUCK!  I do like their Chocolate and I need to try Vanilla.

I can only handle the fruity Nectars if I mix them with twice the amount of water they recommend and add Crystal Light or some SF Da Vinci Syrup.  Right now I am really liking the Twisted Cherry mixed with water and SF Pomegranate syrup. It tastes like my favorite CL, Cherry Pomegranate. My favorite Nectar is the Cappuccino. That is what I mix into my morning cappuccino every day...usually a couple of times each day. I also like the Vanilla Bean Torte mixed into regular coffee. It is sweet so I don't need any Splenda or other syrup in my coffee when I use this. I then add a splash of FF half & half too.

I don't like the strawberry-kiwi Nectar but I love the Carribean Cooler and the Crystal Sky.  I have to put at least 20 oz of water in with it to be able to drink it.  I like the Crystal Sky by itself.  It tastes like tropical punch.  The carribean cooler I like mixed with different crystal light (or walmart brand) flavors.  I like the raspberry lemonade and pink lemonade the best.  I can't tolerate the canned protein drinks.  Takes me back to the pre-op diet.  Just the smell of one of them and I want to puke!!!  My new favorite is 1scoop of vanilla ice cream protein powder mixed with 1 packet of orange sunrise crystal light, 2 or 3 chunks of pineapple (splenda sweetened) mixed with water.  Blend all together and its absolutely wonderful.  It gets a little foamy so drink slow.

Don't give up on trying to find things that you like.  As soon as I came home from hospital I ordered the sample pack from bariatriceating.com and some single sample packs from vitalady.com.  Just because you don't like it now doesn't mean you won't like it after surgery.  Your tastes will change.

Good Luck!!!

Melissa
