Open Rny
I am still pre op and meet with the surgeon in two weeks, however after meeting a few people that started out my size they seem to think I will have to have open rny instead of lap
which isn't what I want to hear. But my question is for those that had open rny, my main concern is the staples being removed....so how painful was that?

why settle for open -- before you even see the surgeons, call their office and ask what percentage of WLS they do as LAP. If the percenetage is low or none, find another surgeon because they don't know how to do LAP or don't want to (too slow/too costly). I went to a teaching hospital and asked for the head of the Laproscopic Department. Since they teach this, they do it more often and on more types of patients so unless you have some unexpeced complication you will get a Lap procedure, less pain, and a faster recovery.
Just my thoughts

Karen, I am pretty sure Dr. Schirmer wouldn't do open surgery unless it's absolutely neccessary. For the time being, don't stress over the unknown...you may be pleasantly surprised after meeting with him.
Oh and don't be worried about having staples removed. I could hardly feel the staples coming out after my c-sections, and that was something I worried about for weeks, lol. Feels sort of like an itchy sensation.

I had open RNY and did not have staples at all. My Docotor of Excellence preferred open RNY and I chose him over the other doctor who did LAP(who was my dr.'s partner). I was a lightweight, too, so my weight was not a factor. My doctor preferred open because he can look around and make sure *everything* was ok. This made me much more comfortable.
The staples hurt less than them pulling an IV out so dont stress my pet you will do fine. And Dr Schirmer will do LAP unless in my case he didnt have a choice there was to much fatty tissue around the top of the stomach for him to get a clear picture he opened me up for my safety and it wasnt all that bad, my opinion some people are just worse healers than others and need more attention, I dont like pain and I did fine. So I know you will too STOP stressing kiddo.
