French Onion Soups Woes

I'm 4 weeks out today and last night I decided I wanted some french onion soup for dinner. I went to Le Madeleine and ordered a cup w/out the cheese and bread. I got it home and started eating it and noticed it seems really salty but still tasty. I didn't eat but maybe a 1/4 cup when my stomach started to grumble so I stopped and put it in the fridge. I realized I had only taken 1 Prilosec instead of 2 that day so I decided to take one since I could feel the acid rumbling in my stomach. All was well when I went to bed until 2:00 am when I woke up so sick to my stomach. I was so nauseous for about 4 hours. I never threw up but only because of shear willpower. I have no idea what was in it that made my new tummy so unhappy but I will never touch french onion soup again - lesson learned. I start solids next week and now I'm so scared that I will be sick all the time. Please tell me it's not so bad, that everything I eat won't make me want to hurl.

Annabellapeekin,

I recently tried eating French Onion Soup and GROSS it was so salty and rich.  I cannot believe I ever thought that was good stuff.  It didn't hurt me but I could see how it could make a person sick...YUCK!  Food will be your friend, you just have to make a little more tame choice for awhile.  The other day I had chicken soup and filled it with tabasco, no problems I'm as normal as I ever was. LOL

Live and learn, I guess.

Oh - it could have been so many other things and not french onion soup, in general... Maybe the soup had gone bad and you didn't notice... Maybe you're stomach was just queasy in general yesterday... Maybe it was taking the Prilosec not at the usual time and after eating... Maybe it was something else you ate... Maybe you ate too fast... Maybe it was the salt..

You won't be sick all the time when you switch to solids. You need to introduce foods, one by one, and see what does and doesn't agree with you. You need to take it slow. If something doesn't agree with you, then try it again a few weeks later. And if you like french onion soup, then don't bani**** for good. In a couple weeks or months, try it again - but maybe try a brand with less salt - or make it yourself. You really will be fine.

Aloha ABP- BUMMER! I love the local bistro's French Onion Soup and have had it twice since surgery- also the onion soup at Benihanas-  did not have a problem. I think our palates definitely change post op- some of the stuff I loved pre op sounds terrible now. It's all about experimentation- and honestly I don't try anything "new" at a restaurant in case I have issues with it. Luckily I love soups, because it's ALOT of what I eat now.
Here is a recipe for chicken tortilla soup-omit the tortillas for lower carb! I think the flavor is wonderful, and this time of year the squash and peppers are easy to come by, plus it freezes well. If you omit one of the jalapenos, it's not as spicy. My stomach thinks the spice levele is fine. XOXOLori

New Year's Tortilla Soup

1 Tblsp olive oil

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips

1 cup diced onion

1 Tblsp minced garlic

1 cup diced red bell pepper

1/2 cup minced cilantro

1 1/2 cups diced tomato

1 zucchini, sliced and quartered

1 yellow squash, sliced and quartered

2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced

2 tsp red chile powder

1 tsp crushed cumin seeds

1/2 tsp crushed coriander seeds

1 tsp salt

Pepper to taste

1 cup drained hominy or corn

1 quart chicken broth ( I use low sodium since there's salt in the recipe)

5 corn tortillas, misted on both sides with oil or cooking spray (OMIT for lower carb)

Heat oil in heavy 3 Qt pot, add chicken and sute until lightly browned. Add onion and saute til softened. Stir in garlic, pepper, cilantro, tomato, jalapenos, seasonings and corn. Cook for a few minutes to concentrate the flavors. Add broth and simmer for 20 minutes.

Cut the tortillas in strips and bake in a 350` preheated opven about 10-12 minutes until crisp. Crush half and stir into soup, simmering for another 15 minutes. OMIT for lower carb.

Ready to serve.

Oh my goodness, that sounds good!  I'm the worlds WORST cook and I think I can handle that recipe so I'm excited. ;o)

I think I'd make it without the chicken and white carbs... sounds wonderful!  Cilantro... the gift to humans from the universe!  ;o)

Not that I'm not above eating certain things...but I have always thought French Onion soup had WAY to much going on!  Sorry you felt bad, but think of your new tummy like a baby and feed it what you would a baby.  Not to much going on with the food...not necessaryily bland, but close to it.  Don't go hog wild with seasonings and stuff till you heal more.

I didn't have it w/ the cheese or the bread - broth and onions only.

Anne,

So sorry you had to go through that.  Now if you like french onion soup, don't give it up.  My nutritionist warned me early on to not get soups from restaurants in the beginning because they are so rich.  You'd think the way you got the soup would be ok, but it could have gone bad or maybe been too much salt for your tiny tummy.  I'm not a big french onion soup person, but had some Campbell's about a month out and it tasted good, but very "strong."

I hope you're feeling better.  No everything you eat won't make you want to hurl.  I will say throwing up now vs. when I had a big tummy isn't bad at all.  I prefer not to, but if I feel sick I just let my tummy dictate and if it wants it out then up it comes.
