What acid reducer do you use post surgery?

Well I am sufferring from a lot of refulx/gerd, and I have found that these drugs work or dont, but it really depends on the individual.

I started out with pepcid, then went to generic prilosec, then protonix, then nexium, and today I was perscribed a double dose of nexium, which I know the insurance will not cover.

So far I have taken one pill a day, and then added a pepcid "booster' at night. it frequently works (but not tonight sadly).

I may go an buy some prilosec and take two a day first to see if that works; it is so much cheaper.

My GI doctor wants to do an endoscopy, but he has never done one on a vsg patient, only on RNY patients. That is a concern.

My only point here is that everyone reacts to these medications differently, so you have to try different ones to find out which one works for you.

My doctor prescribed dissolvable prevacid. Fortunately I didn't suffer with acid problems before surgery and I haven't suffered after. I know longer take them. I am down 49 pounds today and I could not be happier! Congrats on your upcoming surgery. When you are up to it, post and let us know how you are doing. Wishing you a boring surgery and a speedy recovery!

You can take Omeprazole 40mg twice daily as a max dose.  I really recommend the time release capsules.

I will highly recommend a PPI, which stops acid production, rather than an acid reducer, which does its job after the fact.  I have an Rx for Omeprazole, which is Prilosec.  The difference between the Rx version and the OTC version is that the Rx version is time released and the OTC is a tablet.  Also, the OTC version is about $21 for 24-20mg tabs, Omeprazole generic is upwards of $63 for 90-20mg capsules.  I also suggest going to your local Costco Pharmacy to fill this Rx, you do not have to be a member to get Rx's filled there.  It also helps if you can get your PCP to write you and Rx for 20mg twice daily (if you have ins.).  I pay $20 for 60 caps & take one a day for relief.

Best of luck!

I will certainly look into that.  I am going to call the pharmacy as soon as they open up at 9am and see what they can do.  They have to contact my doctor about some information.  We are having the prescriptions filled before surgery so I will be ready with it and not have to go get them after the surgery.  The more things I can get done ahead of time the better.  One more stop at the grocery store to get food for my daughter and that should do it for running around.....I hope!!  :-)

I take the generic Prilosec OTC (20 mg) twice daily. I can tell when I've missed a dose. My stomach gets an uneasy feeling and I feel a lump in my throat. I asked the doc to write me a prescription, but it wound up costing more than if I buy OTC.

If you are buying the OTC generic Costco is by far the cheapest that I have found.

Interestingly, the OTC Prilosec generic in my CVS says delayed release on it and I assume that is the same as time release. So perhaps they are now offering that.

I am going to try 40mg in the morning and 20 mg in the afternoon to see if that works.

I am going to buy the Prilosec OTC generic at Walmart.  I have to go there for my postop prescriptions.  The doctor was nice enough to make them available to me prior to the surgery so I will have them ready.  I canceled the Nexium as it was almost $500 for a 90-day supply.  He gave me something for nausea also and that is only $6.00 and then the liquid Lortab.  I hope you get to feeling better.  I don't really have acid problems right now but there is no telling what I will end up with after.  I hope not to have a problem with acid or GERD.

the generic omeprazole is delayed release (at least many of them are).

the wal-mart version you mentioned definitely is....good luck!
