Looking for more protein in my pre-made shakes....

I tried the "Premier Nutrition" protein shakes in chocolate today (bought them at Costco -- 18 for $24.00) and they aren't half bad.

And at 30g protein per shake (as opposed to just 15 for the Atkins shakes I was drinking), I think I've found a new breakfast!

Any thoughts on these shakes, pro or con?

I haven't tried those but it sounds like a good thing.  Right now I'm drinking worldwide pure protein shake from trader joes.  it's 11oz. with 35 g. protein.  the vanilla and choc. are so good and so very easy for me to drink.  I tried the soy protein powder and added it to a couple things but it just upsets my stomach and then I can't eat the rest of the day.  no more.

I have the atkins shakes but these others are just so good and cost $2.29 each.  so glad i didn't pay for the isopures.  still have about 8 bottles left.  someone gave them to me.

I didn't realize how much protein I got in today or i would have had the atkins.  I'm going to keep an eye on the amount as the day goes by so if I don't need to drink the high protein, I can switch to the atkins since i did pay for those.

I've read on here that your body doesn't metabolize but so much protein at a time anyway. If you take in more than that it just goes right out the other end. So I figured it was a waste of money to try to get in too much at one time. Instead break it up over the course of the day so I make sure I metabolize everything I put in. Like I have the 42 gm bullets, I pour half into a low carb juice, crystal light, whatever, then at the end of the day I pour the other half into some liquid or whatever. I'm pre-op so...But that's what I'm doing now and what I'll be doing post-op.....

O and you can go to www.thedailyplate.com or www.calorieking.com and track what you eat and drink for the day. Makes it a little bit easier to keep up with your intake =)

Aloha All- MsDeb is correct, I confirmed with my nutritionist on one of my follow ups - your body cannot absorb more than 25-30 g protein at any one sitting, the remainder is wasted. Watch for carbs on the protein drinks- EAS Myoplex has an entire line, I use the Carb Control with 25 g protein and only 2 carbs. XOLori

This one looks pretty good to me, but I'm certainly not a nutritionist:

11 oz.
160 calories
3g fat
15mg cholesterol
330mg sodium
680mg potassium
5g total carbohydrate
3g dietary fiber
1g sugars
30g protein

I'm guessing if I have one of these each morning, I'm good to go!

Okay, this is something that drives me completely crazy. It is a myth that you can't absorb more than a certain amount of protein. Think about it: the other macro-nutrients don't work that way. You absorb all your carbs and all your fats and anything you don't need, you store. It's exactly the same with protein.

Our bodies were designed for foraging... cave men would eat a lot of nuts and plants and then once in a while kill a big hunk of meat and eat it in great quantities. Our ancestors certainly weren't eating only 30 g of protein per meal and evolution doesn't move that fast.

Here is an article about it that explains it:

http://nakednutritionnetwork.com/30-grams-of-protein-in-one-meal-rule/

Here's another one that's geared towards body builders, but references a study where they gave people a large amount of protein and measure them and saw that a positive nitrogen balance was achieved as would be expected if all of the protein was utilized.
