What foods are NOT allowed with VSG?

I heard that you are not supposed to eat bread, rice, pasta at all.  That soda even diet soda is a no no , especially using a straw.  Please respond.  Thanks.

That's what my surgeon said, anyway.  They should give you a list of foods you can and can't have.  The point is that you have to eat your protein FIRST, and usually (especially in the beginning), you can't hold anything else after eating 3 oz. of protein.

Most docs want you to avoid carbonation, lap band, RYN or VSG.  Its kind of a WLS no-no for most people.  My doc was very firm on it and I dont miss it.

I know people eat bread and pasta and rice.  It all depends on what plan your doctor asks you to follow.

Straws bring alot of air to the tummy so they are also a no-no

I am currently 6 weeks out and my Dr. and Nut allow me to eat anything I want. BUT, its what you eat that makes us. So on the other hand you have to decide whats the best thing for you. I do not eat bread, rice or pasta and no pop either. I had the surgery for a reason and my goal is to learn a new way to eat. I will allow small amounts of things later, but at the beginning it is very important to get your proteins in. My stomach is so small that I don't have room for anything else usually. Good luck.

 Everyone's nutritionist has different opinions on this.  According to my NUT, the use of a straw is a non-issue. Again, it's what your particular nutritionist "believes in."  It sounds to me, from reading posts here over the past few months, that the jury is pretty evenly split about whether or not carbonation stretches the stomach.  They can't prove or disprove the idea one way or the other.

Personally, I avoid soda because for one thing, it's just way too sweet for me now.  Even diet soda.  And the fizzy stuff just feels kind of weird inside now, too.  It's not something I miss anyway.

At this stage for me, (7 months out) there is nothing that's "not allowed."  Early out, the requirements are a lot different to allow for proper healing and optimum loss.  

The question is about what you're supposed to eat--and not eat-- to lose the weight.  It's about making the right choices.  Yes, I eat bread, rice, and pasta.  Not very often, but occasionally that's what's I want.  And I try to plan it into the rest of my day... if I treat myself to something high carb or high calorie, I compensate for it with the other things I eat--or don't eat-- that day.  

Those things you mentioned as "no-no's" apply to EVERYONE who is trying to lose weight, surgery or not.  Anatomically, there really isn't anything particular to the sleeve that makes these foods a "danger".  They're just poor choices for weight loss.

There is no reason you can't drink with a straw. The whole idea that straws make you gulp in air makes no sense based on how straws work. I was given a straw in the hospital.

Bread, rice & pasta may be tough at first. They do expand in your stomach so when your stomach is really small from being swollen, there may not be enough room. But as you get farther out, there is no reason you can't have them. If you are on a high protein diet, you won't be able to eat tons of them, but you should be able to get them in occassionally.

Carbonated beverages are another thing that can be very uncomfortable early out. Some people do eventually tolerate them. Some people believe they can stretch the sleeve. I don't believe that because gas will take the path of least resistance -- IOW, you'll burp or fart before your stomach will stretch.

However, there are good reasons to avoid soda, even diet soda. Regular soda is full of carbs, sugar and empty calories. It's a poor choice for everyone, WLS or no WLS. Diet soda is associated with weight gain. There are a number of theories as to why, but until we know for sure why this is, I'm not taking a chance. Plus, once you don't drink it for a while, you can lose your taste for it. I think it's really gross now and wouldn't drink it, if you paid me!

Thanks MacM. I love your reasonings. I never understood the straw concept either.

As for the soda, I have given that up but I love my sparkling (aka carbinated) waters (zero sugars, zero calories). I found it to be a good compromise for now as I gave up the soft drinks. I still drink my regular water daily but from time to time I enjoy my sparkling water and wondered about that. I agree one would probably burp or fart before it stretched out a stomach.

My dad has considered WLS but hasn't done it because he's addicted to his Diet Coke (blech). That's what he told me too. He also said if Crystal Light came out with a cola flavor he'd do the WLS in a heart beat, LOL

I used to be addicted to Diet Coke too. But now I can't stand the taste!
