I am a bit over 3 months out and still not able to eat lettuce!!!!

Anyone else this far out still having problems?
Will it go away?

Its hard to eat healthy when I cant eat salad or even raw veggies!  I cant even eat veggies at all if they are not cooked thoroughly!

Any words of wisdom?  Are some lettuce types easier to digest than others?

I do not eat a lot of lettuce (even before this surgery) because there is not a lot of nutrition in lettuce, but I have always mostly eaten fresh spinach salads and at less then 3 months out, have been able to start eating those again successfully.  Another thing I like about fresh spinach is you can use it in cooking also.  I have also been able to eat small quantities of fresh veggies again...you just have to cut them up small (I chop the baby spinach leaves also) and chew well very carefully.  IF digesting them is bothering you, you could try blanching them first before putting them on a salad or dipping them in a FF dressing.  I'm having more of a problem digesting dense proteins than fresh vegetables...everyone is different.

Yumm baby spinach!   I get big boxes of it at Sams Club, and I use it for everything!   Back when I used to have sandwiches, the baby spinach leaves are Soooo muchmore delicious than lettuce in a sarnie!

Have you tried Bok Choy?   That's really good stuff - both the stems and the leaves.   Oh yummmm, there go my plans for dinner.

Yes, I LOVE Bok Choy...I believe you only eat Bok Choy cooked though, like in a stir fry...I have never seen it eaten raw like spinach.  I love the versatility of baby spinach and that it is good for you also.

No, you're right.   I've never heard of anybody eating Bok Choy raw.   Oh it's so good, no matter how you cook it!

I don't have any advice, just wanted to say sorry you are having trouble with it.  It stinks that healthy foods can sometimes be harder to eat post op and junk still slides right down.  I eat romaine all the time and raw carrots with no probs, so hopefully you will be able to in no time!

soft leafy greens...spinach...avocados...cucumbers (that's a salad there) garbanzo beans, bean sprouts are soft...and lots of protein...tomato...

if you chew them well they would go through pretty easy...

the previous poster said spinach salads..I ate them at one month out..I was eating avocados a lot in the betginning..i had to stop that after six months..not all but eating three a day..

you can always juice your veggies too

Does the lettuce give you digestive problems?

Raw veggies are too filling for me and too bland tasting.

I have a mega bowl of steamed veggies next to my computer.  I can eat it all day long (takes care of my grazing days).

I eat lettuce almost daily, red leaf or romaine are my favorites.

Hi JLo,
I am in the exact same boat you are.  I have gotten clearence from my doc to eat them but he said raw veggies will be hard to do so take it slow.  I miss salads so much.  I love raw cucumbers, carrots celery in hommus.  so i really feel your pain, it would be so much easier snack wise if i could eat these things.  i am really trying them a few times a week.  I think it iwll be the practice makes perfect.    hope that helps.  darcy
