OT: what do you take for anxiety? (like flying)

Hi, I take something for every day anxiety/depression (not sure if I have it or not); I take wellbutrin but I really don't like to fly but have to every once in a while, so I was wondering what some people take for "short term" anxiety like flying.  I have tried ativan and it make me a wreck emotionally.  I also don't do well with valium or codeine.  Basically, I need some kind of tranquilizer that will help me/knock me out for several hours.  Some people have recommended that I just have a few drinks, but I don't want to get tipsey=silly.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  And my fear of flying is getting worse.  I know where I am going if anything happens, but I just get so worried while I fly with turbulence and plus I think I have adult add/adhd so I can't sit for long periods of time.  Any way my dislike for flying is just getting worse, but I my husband likes to travel once a year or so, and I like to visit a friend in LA, I have relatives in Germany, etc. and I just hate that this controls me.

I don't know, but I would love to know! I am terrified of flying and I will take my first plane ride in August! Alcohol comes to mind but thats probably not a good idea right before surgery.

You take something EVERY DAY for anxiety/depression and your "NOT SURE IF [YOU] HAVE IT OR NOT???"

why in the world would you be taking medication for something you're not even sure you have?

Like the lady said, Xanax give you courage, Valium can just knock you out.

I also like repeating the

Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

I don't think this mantra will work for me. "Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration." This is why I am terrified of flying, death and oblitereation

Klonopin is what my PCP gives me for flying.
It takes the edge off and relaxes you.
You also don't remember much about the flight the next day.
I HATE to fly!

I suggest a trip to the health food store for some valerian pills - a mild, natural, tranquilizer. As far as sitting still for a long time - don't. Get up and walk around the cabin as much as you can. I *always* do this on long/transatlantic flights, and I also go down to the end by the galley and stand by the windows and do stretches, etc. The crew rarely object or question it, but when they have, I told them my doctor said I was prone to edema and blood clots and that I should do this when I fly (and actually, everyone should), and they shut up and go away immediately (some years ago, a 29-year-old woman died in Heathrow airport from a blood clot shortly after getting off a transatlantic flight, and they are petrified of this - and the lawsuit - happening again).

Finally, you might want to see a therapist who specializes in CBT to treat fears/phobias like fear of flying. Good luck and bon voyage!

You also might consider the tapping techniques at emofree.com.  The technique is EFT Emotional Freedom Technique and may be helpful for just this situation.
