Do You Eventually Stop Drinking Protein Shakes?

I'm a tad bit confused so if anyone can help shed some light, that'd be great!  I'm looking over my "Sleeve Gastrectomy Owner's Manual" that my surgeon's staff gave me. Specifically, I'm looking at what I will be able to drink the first 2 weeks out and I'm confused. I thought protein supplements were allowed throughout the whole process but the booklet says otherwise. I mean, I know once you get to the mushy and solid stages that they want you to EAT your protein but idk, I thought you could drink it too if you weren't getting enough by eating??

For instance, the book says that during stage one (clear liquids)  the approved protein supplements are: Unjury, Nectar, Abb Pure Pro, or Isopure Zero Carb. It continues on to say "You will need to purchase enough clear liquid protein supplements to last 7 - 10 days." And then it goes on to talking about stage 2 (full liquids) and it says "Discontinue use of clear liquid protein supplements at this time, unless your surgeon or dietician recommends otherwise. Continue drinking at least 64oz of the approved clear liquid beverages allowed in Stage 1. Some full liquid protein supplements DO NOT COUNT toward your fluid needs. These are the only food and beverages allowed in Stage 2, absolutely nothing else. They provide you with the recommended calories and protein per day to meet your nutritional goals. Drink protein supplements SLOWLY. Liquid protein supplements are not allowed after these stages unless specifically recommended by your surgeon or dietician."

Uhh, what??

Liquid protein supplements....as in protein shakes aren't allowed after stage 2?? I thought they were. BAH! I'm so confused!

Edited to fix a confusing sentence.

For my diet, I am now not supposed to have protein shakes now that I am eating food. I Think the best thing is to clearify everything with your surgeon before you go home, and make sure he will be available if you have questions once you are home. If you look at some of the posts, you will notice there is a big difference in everyones post op meal plan. I was a little confused about my diet too, to be honest I still am! LOL

I have not *had* to drink them for protein since I started eating whole foods, but I like to keep them around - and grind them up with delicious flavored ice and make slushy things!  Especially good for when I am having a crazy sweet tooth.

I will also add some metamucil to them with my flavor ice and make a fiberyslush!!   Never hurts to get a lilla more fiber in your  life!

I never liked them and didnt want to feel different so I got off them ASAP.  So at 6 weeks I think was when I started eating pretty much just protein all the time until I could fit in other things too and still get my 70 grams.  he good news is I am so good at it I dont eat many carbs (even though I dont limit carbs) and I usually get over 100 grams a day (I work out alot so I want to get more)

sounds to me like your plan is your allowed to use the protein supplements that are clear like water for stage one and then when you get to stage two your allowed to use protein shakes that are not clear like chocolate, or the fruity ones...

on my plan we can supplement for life but there are people that choose to do it by solid food alone and if they can successfully show the nutritionist they can get in the amount of protein needed  she will ok that too... best advice is to ask and see what your plan recommends sometimes after surgery finding a protein shake you can tolerate is not easy for me i had to go to a ready to drink one i get at costco ...

Thanks everyone! I guess we could all agree that I shouldn't spend a whole lot of money on protein supplements until I know what my dietician says, right?

Thank you all for helping me clarify that.

At this point, I can eat whatever I want, but I choose to have a protein shake every morning for breakfast.

(and by whatever I want, I mean that there are no foods I am physically unable to eat.  But I am very careful about food and try to avoid all white carbs.)

To be honest at 17 months post-op - I still have a protein shake for breakfast almost every day.  Normal breakfast food makes me nauseous.

Why - I never ate breakfast, this started when I was 10 years old.   At that time my parents divorced, so we kids were on our own for breakfast and lunch.  I might have a glass of milk or OJ, but no usually no solid food until dinner.  This was before the free lunch programs came to schools.  Sometimes we would get lunch money, sometime just enough change for Milk.  Due to that I still can not tolerate solid food before 10a.m., so after discussion with my surgeon and PCP - they agreed with me the protein shake was better than nothing.

This works for me, each surgeon and nut have their own programs that they recommend.  But we are all individuals so adjustment in the eating suggestions should be allowed to help us succeed.  I made my doctors goal weight in 1 year 2 weeks and am over 50, so this worked for me.
