Preop diet...Cruel and Unusual Punishment

I started my preop diet yesterday.  Feel sluggish and tired and weak.  My surgeon has us doing 5 70 calorie shakes/broth a day (provided by surgeon's office and gross) and with water and crystal light. nothing else is allowed. that is only 350 calories a day!  This is worse than the liquid diet that comes after the surgery.  Can this be right?  I see so many others that are allowed a small meal for dinner.  I don't want to cheat but this is a bit unrealistic.  I'm wondering if they say this becuase they know we will eat and they want us to eat less?  I am feeling like I should be able to eat some protein for dinner as the whole point of shrinking the liver has to do with eating protein.  Has anyone ever ate during their preop liquid diet?

Hi!! I am one month post op at this point.

I did the pre-op diet for one week and I got to say that when looking through this website, it seems that different surgeons were recommending different things...

for example, my diet was that i could have only the following: chicken broth, jello, pudding, boost, ensure, water, crystal light, popsicles, --of course all low or fat free and no sugar.  I sure foudn this hard to start off with but then it gets easier. And the post op diet i find is much easier that the pre op that you are currently doing.

So i probably didnt help much but i had the same question as you---seeing that some people were eating meals and it was confusing me as the rule I was told for the pre op diet was "only drink things that pour like milk- no clumps".

I would say that 350 cal per day seems soooooooo low. Mine was definately higher than that....could you talk to ur surgeon and explain you are having a hard time..is there a dietician that you can talk to.....things will get better post op...i dont regret a thing

My diet was 4 bottles of diabetic boost, black tea or coffee, and water (anyway I wanted to flavor it, calorie free) and that was for 2 full weeks..It was brutal but is the hardest part and it worked, because my liver was small and no complications, so was well worth it in the end..Thats about 800 cals per day..I am 7 days post surgery and am on full liquids now for one more week, then purees next week for 2 weeks...I never thought I would look forward to chicken broth and apple sauce..hahaha...It'll be worth...Stick it out..The first 3-4 days are the worst, your stomach WILL get used to it and will become easier, I promise..
Good Luck

way to rub it in there melanie.  But that's exactly what I'm talking about.  Why is your diet so free and ours so miserable?  Teh shakes and brothe we have are 70 calories a packet.  today i only had 2 because they are gross. then i had sugar free jello but in all only 140 calories today. that can't be right.
I emailed the nut.  hope she returns the email.
cant wait for surgery to be over.  at least then i can have other types of liquids.

Im with you.  I am on day 4 of a 2 week liquid diet.  I am supposed to have 4 protein shakes a day and can have broth, sugar free popsicles and sf jello.  I thought it was going to be worse than it is.  I have to say the first 2 days were the worst and now its not so bad.  I really love my broths and look forward to them..LOL.  Which is so funny to me, never thought broth would be my favorite meal of the day..haha.

I had the same pre-op diet. 2 weeks of it. It was horrible and I passed out 2 times. Only broth, low cal protein shakes and sugar free pops. I felt mine was dangerous.

Now if the Dr. or dietition made it that strict, knowing people would cheat, but wanted people to loss weight, what about the people that really did stick to it. I really hated those 2 weeks, it was way too harsh.

I know how you feel.

I would call them and talk to them. There are ways to "cheat" that won't impact what the pre-op diet is supposed to do and they should be able to help you modify the basic diet into something livable. After all, you can't be the first person to have issues with their diet!

Mac, im curious, what is Dr Cirangles preop diet requirements and post op.  SInce he is the pioneer so to speak.  I would compare to his.

AS for my post op.
that's crazy too.
3 weeks of liquids.
3 weeks of puree
4 weeks of soft foods
then regular food after that.
