Stopped Protein Shakes and broke stall
Revision on 12/09/13
I had a 3 week stall at 3 weeks out. When I started losing again, I was only losing about a pound a week. I stopped my protein shakes a couple of weekends ago because I didn't have any room for food. I also upped my calorie count. The first weekend I lost 8 pounds. This past weekend I lost 7 pounds and have lost another two pounds since yesterday. Has anyone else noticed a significant weight loss without the protein shakes?

I was just able to add beef to my diet a couple of weeks ago. I love steak. So the first weekend I had nothing but really tender sirloin tips and crystal light all weekend. The second weekend I had nothing but pot roast, peanut butter and crystal light. So I was definitely getting protein in just not from the shakes.

I'm not your doctor, but make sure you're getting the daily protein you need. You'll see the affects of insufficient protein with signs like hair loss. I don't like the shakes, but I'm still not far out enough from surgery to stop. Even then, my surgeon has me on lifetime of 60 grams protein shakes a day. I'm sure once I get to my goal wieght, I can do less or not at all.
What kind of shakes were you drinking? How many calories per shake and how many carbs?
I stopped drinking the shakes that I was on pre-op (PrescriptFit from my surgeon's office) because of the carb count.
Have you compared your calorie count/carb count now that you're not drinking shakes to before when you were?

I agree W/ the last poster. Not all protein shakes are good for you! Some are high in carb/cals! (like 400+ cals 30-40 carbs!) What are the #'s on the brand you were using? I know for me, protein shakes are a necessity. ( I can't eat enough food to meet my protein goals!) The latest info on protein intake for WLS patients is 80-100 grms (ASBMS recommendations) I saw a powerpoint presentation on the newest info and recommendations presented at the ASMBS conference last month. I feel for ME it is working well, I try to get 150 grms per day. Everyone is different and should ask their Dr.. I have talked W/ many SMO people like myself and the ONE thing they did was consume 100+grms per day (some were taking in 200+!) Most were men, and were working out W/ weights also, (this makes a difference) But I'm still sticking W/ my shakes! Ive lost 240+ lbs in less than a year! It works for me.

Hi All
Thanks for the feedback. I'm getting all the protein my nutritionist and doctor asked me to get plus some. I'm eating a lot of lean meat al day just not doing the shakes anymore.
The shakes are the ones I have been drinking since my surgery. They are the Premier shakes from Costco, 160 calories 30 g protein 3 grams of fat and 5 carbs. I only used to have one a day for breakfast but I wouldn't be able to eat that much food during the day. Not drinking the shake I am able to eat more then before.
not really worried about hair loss. I have enough hair for me and two other people :) Plus I know it will grow back. I haven't seen any loss so far and I know it doesn't happen to everyone. I do have a change in hair texture after surgery. I'm seeing my hairdresser once a week, keeping my hair moisturized and ends clipped. I'm taking aloe once a day for my hair in addition to getting in all of my fluids, vitamins, and food.
