Background in case its needed:  I was not sent home on PPIs, only acid reducers. Took them until the 2 month supply was gone, have not had issue.  Yaay.

Folks had conversation re: gastric emptying - that sleevers empty out quicker, one solution to slowing down emptying is addition of a PPI. MzLaura also said when she was NOT on her PPI, she had the starvin marvins.

I typically get hungry every 3 hours. Do not find it unreasonable, since I eat small amounts. Its not an issue for me - but I was curious if it would extend my hunger.

Personal Findings:

Hunger:  My hunger went from clockwork 3 hours (if I had eaten a dense meal before) to 4+ hours.

Constipation:  HOly Moley. Yes.  Due to a poll sort of thing taken, have gathered many ways to remedy that. Some folks get it, some folks do not.  Hey!  That must mean, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.  Novel!  Yes!

NAUSEA!!! : Wow, yea.  I had 2 bouts of nausea in the year and a half after surgery (both due to random run-ins with egg salad), before taking the PPI starting last Tuesday. Since last Tuesday I have been nauseous and/or hurked at least once per day, random times before and/or after eating.  Still eating the same foods I was eating so no change in food or volume that could be the culprit.

Personal Summary:

Hunger:  It definitely helped space my hunger out. If my hunger was a huge problem, then this might possibly be a solution.  Not sure if that is just a short term finding in the beginning of the use, which it could be, but it is a nice thing to store in my memory banks in case.

Constipation: Not worth the "exit" fee, as MsLee put it.  Even Miralaxing, Colacing, and Smooth Move Teaing it has not eliminated that for me. If I *needed* the PPI because of horrible reflux/heartburn/GERD, then I would definitely find a away to deal, but just to extend hunger a bit, not so much.

Nausea:  Again, another if I do not have medical need, there is no point in suffering through or learning to deal.

So!!  There ya have it, in case you wondered!  Or in case you did not there you have it anyway.

The constipation and the nausea are not worth it to me to continue to see if they go away.  I heartily vote no to having angry anus and broken blood vessels all over my face and neck!

Mz B~

Thank you for experimenting for all of us.  I've been on Protonix 2x a day since surgery.  Waking up with acid in my mouth on night 3 is on my top 10 list of things to avoid in the future.

So interesting about the nausea.  I think I hurled daily during month 2.  Measured amounts of food but Sleevie just wasn't happy.  Now it's only occasional but I do notice that 1 hour after taking the Protonix, I feel a deep empty well in my Sleeve.  Then it goes away.

Constipation.  Since you started the experiment and brought up the PPI as the culprit, I have started adding a Colace to my daily meds.  I'll see if it helps.  I always thought it was just from the high protein because it was always a problem for me during the many years on Atkins.

I love that we're all Novel.  Let's write one girlfriend.  That said, I've known from day 1 that you're unique and a blessing to all of us that follow your story.

I did the opposite experiment for about 6 weeks...I didn't take my PPI. Fortunately I didn't have any GERD but I did have the mad munchies, especially the last couple of weeks. So, for me, I have concluded that PPI's will have to stay a part of my life for now and since I've taken them the past few days my hunger is much more tame.

On another note I had a question for you. What are the probiotics you take? You mentioned something about them last week and that they were chewable. I'll be in need of some good ones after finishing a round of antibiotics this week!!!

Thanks :)

Craptastict! I am hoping once I stop taking these things I do not get the mad munchies, because the mad munchies without doobage? Pointless!  and infuriating.  Muwhahaha!!  I crackle me up.  But really!

I digress (unusual, I know).

Know what? The chewable ones were just like 5 bucks a bottle ones that came in a white bottle and were either strawberry or blueberry flavor.  Durn, the vitamin shoppe site does not have them on the interwebs, but I got them at the local grocery store!

If you need serious probiotics - I know some of the the DSers swear by Primal Defense!

Here is kind of inexpensive on amazon.

Thanks Brandilynn, I completely forgot about the Primal Defense variety!!! I've seen it mentioned on the DS board in the past...
