I am going to Mexico to have the VSG on 3-18-2011. I am covered under Kaiser insurance. They will not help me with any gastric surgery because I am fat and healthy. I just want to know if they will help if something goes wrong once back?

Do you have kaiser?  If so, why not go through kaiser to get the VSG done.  oh i just read your fat and healthy,,,,, I hate that.  ughhhh.

Well I have seen people with bands get them elsewhere and kaiser is helping them with their complications.   yes kaiser will help you but dont go announcing it to them.  keep your insurance current.

Thanks... I total didn't plan on letting them know that why I am asking on here. Kaiser is such a crazy insurance. I like them in some way and disagree in others.

I am fat and healthy also! I have Kaiser and they are doing my VSG with no problems. Here is the process. You go to your PCP and tell him you want a referral to the Baratrics Dept. Baratrics will then call you and tell you that you need to take the Options classes. You can file a formal grievence and not take the classes. I am taking them to gain the knowlege. Upon completion of the 12 week program they will then refer you to a surgeon. Then surgeron will schedule a date!
Yes, it will take time but if there are any complications Kaiser is close by.

 Gina,

I have been trying to get referred to a gastric surgeon for 10 years and none of my PCP will refer me. Also I was told Kaiser doesn't offer VSG. Your very blessed.

I also have a friend that has moved 3000 miles away and she also has Kaiser and they have done the same to her.

What state do you live in?
I am in Southern Ca, and I did the Kaiser Options class. They actually really encouraged the VSG over the band but said that ultimately it is the surgeon's decision, with your desires taken into account. Where I am, Kaiser had me go through a contractor who was good about giving me the sleeve. It's a shame that they pull the "fat and healthy" business on you. A good chunk of the purpose for getting surgery is to prevent obesity-related illnesses down the road.

I agree 100%!!! I don't want medical issues so I'm doing what I need to do to make a better life for myself, little girl, and my soon to be husband. I want to be outgoing, happy, and healthy person again.

I had my VSG done in Mexico in January.  Three days before, I met with my PCP and told her what I was doing and that I wanted a referral to the Bariatric department.  Surgery went without a hitch and my PCP is doing my labs.  I was referred to Richmond (I don't know where you are) because I am in their cachement area but they are pretty unfriendly to patients with surgery outside Kaiser.  The nutritionist was helpful in telling me what sort of supplementation to take, and when their support meetings meet.  To get to your question, she also said that if I thought I had any surgical complications there was a bariatric surgeon on-call 24 hours in Richmond and I should go there for evaluation and treatment.   So, the treatment I am getting is kind of mixed.  I have heard that SSF is much more welcoming to outside surgical patients.
