Why you dont drink after your meals

Great video !!!

It explains only half of the reason you don't want to drink after meal though.....

The video is correct for RNY and Lapband.

At the end of our sleeve.... we retain the Pyloric Valve....when the Pyloric Valve is open....it is the diameter of a dime to a nickel. Liquids, soft foods....slider foods can go through there at a pretty fast rate just like the funnel in the video.

When we (VSG) eat a dense protein or a hard to digest food like celery, broccoli stalk, cucumber skin. The Pyloric Valve closes down to the size of the tip of a ball point pen. This is for pre-digestion and the reason you hear "Eat Protein First"

What you don't want to do is put liquid on top of food with a closed Pyloric Valve. It won't go through for a while.... it will back right up.... that's how you can get foamies and even vomit. The other bad thing is you put "High Pressure" in your sleeve because your Pyloric is closed and you esophagus is closed. Your esophagus only opens when swallowing or vomiting.

Hope this helps...

This is awesome information, and actually might help explain why I feel like I'm going to toss up dinner if I drink a ton immediately after, even though I'm pre-surgery.

I'll definitely keep this in mind post-op. Thanks, Friso!

You know, after I learned that we weren't suppose to drink for a while before and after meals, I tried it presurgery.  I could not eat as much.  Food just wouldn't go down.  I think that people that struggle with their weight and are not having surgery, would benefit from this info.  It is a great tip for anyone that wants to eat less.

I have done the same thing, actually. I started cutting back what I drank with food a few months ago, and now when I eat I may have a sip or two, but while my boyfriend refills his tea glass 6+ times, I don't even drink half a glass. I would then end up chugging the drink after food-time was over (not really because I needed it, but because I didn't want it to go to waste), and then feel sickly, possibly because of what Frisco is talking about here.

Now I've got Camelbak bottles at home and work, so if I ever have a bunch left over, I can just stick it in the fridge, and I haven't felt sick like that in a long while.

Frisco, You always have such good information. Where do you find this stuff? I pride myself on doing my homework but don't run across the stuff you share.

I have a great Surgeon who you can see monthly the first year if you wanted to......

And he runs his own Support Groups every month and talks about stuff like this....

 Hey, good info.

I did the video in question here.. and yea, I've been thinking I need to do an updated version. I have better equipment and software now, plus I know a bit more. I barely knew of, let alone knew anything about VSG at the time I initially did this video.
