Ketosis and the sleeve

So just wondering here, how many of you are/were in Ketosis and if so how long did that last? I am familiar with this from my time with Gestational Diabetes and some long years of Atkins dieting. Has anyone been in ketosis for a long period of time? I am about 8 weeks out and its still going strong. I have read very conflicting info on Ketosis and even gotten conflicting ideas from fellow dieters, diabetic friends and doctors. Whats your take on weight loss induced ketosis and its effects on your health. (not your weight loss per say)

As of now I am in the mind set that as long as I am keeping really hydrated i am not putting myself at some elevated risk but ketosis will either way make me high risk for kidney stones.

My diet as of now is 99 percent protein. I pretty much have shakes, lunch meat, steak, ground beef, eggs, cheese (mozzarella and cheddar mix) chicken, and almonds. I have not really even worked very hard on veggies yet I had a small piece of broccoli last night and have had a few bites of tomato here and there as well as lettuce and bell pepper. Im not anti carb at all, ( i have made some low carb pizza and had a few bites or a bite of this here or there just not even on a weekly or bi-weekly basis) its just I don't have room for it yet and meeting my protein needs does not leave room for carbs or anything else for that matter. Im not craving any kind of food or wanting to eat so I have not overeaten or even eat till being really full. That makes me wonder if I am eating too little. I can tell when I am done that I could very well have more but it just seems silly if Im not hungry.
Do you think I should be attempting to eat more?

I say go with it.   If you can get your body into ketosis and maintain an awesome weight loss there is no problem.  Fact is you can't stay in ketosis forever, it will fry your kidneys.  But if at this point you can keep your fluids up you are good.  As long as the doctor is ok with your progress (and NUT)  then keep it up.

I lost 90 lbs during this past "Atkins Craze" and have for the most part been able to keep it off since then.  During that time Ketosis was my pal for sure.  In order for me to stay on it though, I had to keep my carbs no more than 10 grams per day and if I ate anything with more than 2 grams of sugar/carbs I would be knocked out of it for like three days or so and have a little water weight gain. So for me, it was just a matter of being super careful and staying strong.

I went to the doctor a few times during that and my blood work and blood pressure were fantastic.  As for my kidneys, I did have to remember to drink as much water as possible to avoid uric acid buildup.

Go for it, Jenn! If you can stay strict, the pounds should melt off!

Ketosis means you are burning fat for fuel. Ketones are the by product of fat metabolism. It essentially means you could be burning dietary fat or body fat, which is what you WANT. Contrary to myth ketosis is not bad for the kidneys.

This myth is prevalent because of the misunderstanding between ketosis and ketoacidosis that many people know about which can cause kidney failure with diabetics.

There are people on this planet who survive entirely on animal protein their whole lives and are fine, and they are in ketosis their whole lives. For example the nomadic Chintu people of Russia. Read more about ketosis and the myths about it here, and ignore people like Dr. C who parrot the partyline about ketosis:

I'm glad you posted this because I am majorly confused about this.  I am on my pre-op diet now and I am supposed to be eating high in protein and low in carb but some things that I find high in protein and low in carb seem like are bad for me anyway so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be eating them and if I do, will it affect the surgery?  You mentioned almonds, I was looking at almonds and I really like cashews better so I bought some that had a lot of protein and not that many carbs.  Cashew seem bad to me though because they have a lot of calories from fat, so am I messing up my diet?  Also, I am eating steak, chicken, fish and things like that but is it ok if I fry them?  Doesn't seem like it is but it didnt say anything about that in the diet plan.  I try not to use too much grease but I dont have a grill so I'm limited.  Help???????????????????????????

Gabriella,

It depends on what your definition of "bad" is.  For instance, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can be a very healthy part of your diet.  Those are the kinds of fats found in nuts like Cashews.

As for frying, coconut oil or oliv oils are probably the healthiest.  There is new research coming out that shows the idea we grew up with that "fat makes you fat" is a fallacy.  It's actually sugar and carbs that make us fat, although some people's matabolisms can tolerate them better than others.  As for myself, carbs are bad news!

We are not meant to be in Ketosis forever, however during our weightloss stage it is great because it means we are burning fat rather than muscle.  its the protein that gives us high risk for kidney stones and that is why we need to drink water to prevent kidney stones and constipation.

i am 7 weeks out and still in ketosis.  Yipppeeeee we are losing weight!
