morphine
When I had my two c-sections, they put me on a morphine pump afterwards for me to push the little button when necessary. I was , both times, in so much pain, until they took away the morphine and put me on Lortab.
Also, I feel I have a high tolerance for pain, but when I go to the dentist, it seems they have to give me extra numbing medicine than usual.
Well, come to find out, I read an article recently that said that redheads, or very light-complected people have these problems!! I was thinking I was crazy all this time, since you think of morphine as THE drug, ya know?
So what I am wondering is, who else has this problem, and will my sugeon think I am crazy to say, PLEASE don't give me morphine!
Thanks!
Sheri

I did not have a pump, they were giving me morphine in my IV but it wasn't touching the pain ! I asked for something different and was given dilaudid. It did the trick immediately. Every body is different, and each surgery is different. A few years ago I had a large, open, abdominal surgery and the morphine pump worked beautifully.
I would discuss your history with the surgeon, and ask him to have several pain medications listed so that the nurses can switch if one is not holding you, without having to contact him first.

Hey Sheri... Like you, I've had a few C-sections and have ALWAYS had to ask for additonal pain meds... With my first, I was in the recovery room & I barely remember it, I was sooooo loopy from all the morphine they were giving me, but I do remember that I was still in a bus load of pain! When I was eventually put in a room (12am) it took the stupid nurses until almost 4:30 to bring me any pain relief at all (after frequent buzzing of the nurses' station), and I felt like I was going to die(They said they thought I had a morphine pump, I didn't!!!!) The anasthesiaologist (sp?) came to visit me the following morning to follow up on me. He was concerned and stated that he's never had to give someone so much morphine after a c-section? Duh... ya' think he would have tried something else after it didn't seem to be working?
With my second child, (different hospital) I was given a morphine pump, but they still had to give me something else in my IV every few hours cause the pain would still breakthrough. With my 3rd and final baby, they just injected pain relief into my IV... I don't even know what it was, but it worked beautifully.
With all three of my C-sections they had to give me more than one Spinal block because they just wouldn't 'take'....
So yeah, I gotta say that I understand where you're coming from! I'm not a red-head (not naturally anyway), but I have a very fair complexion & blue eyes... Very interesting, do you remember where you read that article? I would love to read it!!!
Good Luck With your surgery.
