OK, another question? Swallowing pills?

How long until you can swallow pills/ vitamins, etc?  My prevacid is a dissolvable so I wont have to swallow that and I got some free samples of vitamins that are chewable.  But just curious about swallowing pills?

Also, has anyone tried the protein drinks from GNC that are in little tubes?  With fruit flavors?  Wondering if I can mix that with some crushed ice and make a slushy for my protein in my clear liquid stage?

I was swallowing pills in the hospital the day after surgery.  Depends on your tolerance/swelling.

The protein in a tube is usually collagen protein, not whey or soy.  Collagen isn't really used as a source of protein by the body, so stay away from it!

So what about something like this?  It says it is whey.  http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3030814&cp=35 93187.4189426

I think that looks pretty decent but if it isn't going to do me any good then I wont bother with it.  I want to make sure I have ENERGY!!!

It has whey in it but it really won't do you much good. It's a 'blend' and is mostly collagen, collagen being the first ingredient of the 'blend' with whey and casein. Don't waste your money on the shots (aside from the fact most people report they taste like crap).

The third day after my surgery, they started giving me pills to take by mouth in the hospital and they went down fine! It all depends on what you can tolerate though and what your new tummy can tolerate as well! (:

surgeon told me i could swallow pills the size of a m and m (we all know that size) or smaller right away post op. pills i had were thankfully small. chewed tums for calcium for a few weeks until i could do the bigger pills. i still use kids chewable vitamins after 17 months and my labs are perfect.

i used those protein bullets some to help me get enough in early on. usually just a half one a day in addition to the other stuff. taste like $H---!!!  but i could slug down a half which is a shot glass worth. they say it does not have the best type of protein so i wouldn't rely on it exclusively. make your regular protein drinks icy cold - even partially frozen - and then pour out just a couple of ounces at a time and drink just that little bit and repeat in an hour. easier than staring at a big ol' glass of room temperature drink. freezing the protein drink and then nuke it a bit to soften and then run through the blender gives a nice texture like soft serve which is easier to consume.

I don't have a problem with swallowing them, it's how it feels in my stomach.  Only until Feb did I swallow calicum pills.  I need two, so I take them 30 minutes apart.  I get nauseated if I take them at the same time.  I do flintstone chewables.

I use the powder whey protein for shakes, but I use whey protein shots for those times on the go when I can't make a shake.  The quality of the protein isn't that great, but it helps in a crunch.  No need wasting time making a beverage; they're only about 3 ounces, three sips and you're done.  For the price, it's not worth it for regular, daily use - unless you got it like that.  Good luck!  ~~S

I was told a week before I can swallow pills. I went out and got liquid or crushable versions of my medicines.

Ingredients for the shots:  Pure Deionized Water, Actinase (blend of enzymatically hydrolyzed collagenic protein isolate, whey protein isolate & casein protein isolate), Malic Acid, Myovol™Complex (proprietary blend of leucine, valine, and isoluceine), Natural Flavors, Sodium Bicarbonate, Acesulfame-Potassium, Sucralose, Blue 1, Red 40

Yes, it does have SOME whey protein in it, but it's primarily collagen.  Always look at the ingredient that's listed first, 'cause that's what it mostly contains.  Not a good source of protein and, given the small amount of food you can take in right after surgery, I wouldn't waste the space on it.
