VOMITING BLOOD...2 wks post-op...Hospitalized & Confused! NEVER chew &...
Hi everyone,
I was sleeved on May 19th and besides the horrible gas pain in my shoulder, I felt okay. I took the liquid vicodin for the first 7 days and the gas pains stopped at about day 10. I did exactly what I was supposed to do...sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk. Never did I vomit or feel nauseated.
Everything was fine and dandy until Day 13, last Tuesday, I did something STUPID and let my head hunger get the best of me. I bought a whopper so I can chew and spit out a few bites. I had no intention of swallowing nor did I ever swallow any of it. I just wanted the taste of real food in my mouth - so stupid and careless, I know.
After a few bites I spit out, I felt my stomach suddenly feel very, very full and bloated and nausea set in. After a couple minutes, I vomited a ton of blood...YES, bright red, pure blood. Scariest day of my life by far. My husband rushed me to the Kaiser ER where the nurses and doctors didn't know what to do because I am a bariatric patient and my surgery was "outsourced' to Fountain Valley hospital although covered by Kaiser insurance. They thought it would be best if I was transported to Fountain Valley where I can be under my surgeon (Dr. Ali's) care so 6 hours later they transported me by ambulance to FV where they admitted me.
The next morning, I had an upper GI where they detected nothing - no leaks. I felt completely normal, no pain whatsoever but they kept me for 2 nights and released me Thursday morning. I went home and started my normal life again. I was cooking dinner for my husband and the nausea came back and I vomited 3 times, all blood and HUGE blood clots. It must have been at least 8-10 ounces of blood and my sleeve supposedly only holds 4-5 ounces. TMI, I know, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience. Anyway, once again, I was rushed to the ER. My husband took my to Kaiser since it is only 5 minutes from my house and I was very faint and passing out...he didn't want to risk driving 20 minutes to FV. Once I regained my strength after being given an IV, I checked myself out and my husband drove me to Fountain Valley instead of waiting 6 hours for an ambulance again. I was discharged earlier that morning and readmitted that evening - so not fun. They did an endoscopy the next day (Friday) and found no leaks! They say I have a mild case of gastritis which is causing irritation to my stomach but they say they are absolutely positive that I have no active bleeding the pictures they took during the endoscopy proved that. I was given a blood transfusion later that day because my hemoglobin was low and told to only drink water or broth and wait for my stomach to heal and they would discharge me the next day. Well, today is Saturday and guess what...I vomited blood AGAIN...this time they were able to see exactly what I was describing. How is it that I have no active bleed if I am obviously vomiting sooooo much blood. Although I am not in pain, I am terrified and the doctors and my surgeon do not know what is wrong with me. All they can come up with is gastritis? Seriously?
If anyone has had a similar experience, please please share it with me. I am so scared that I made the wrong decision.
It sounds like they are able to rule out a leak, and maybe something else is going on... have you seen anyone else, or just your surgeon? Maybe this is seperate from surgery. I don't know enough about it, but would request to see a GI specialist. Upper GI bleeding can be from the liver, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, and even blood vessels in the stomach.....
I hope they find out what's wrong soon!
To God be the glory.
I just cried and just said this prayer for or OP.
Amen!
