People with hunger - does a real snack help?
So, as I have mentioned in many posts, I still have hunger... usually between breakfast and lunch (which is a 6 hour stretch), and lunch and dinner (a 5-7 hour stretch).
My doctor has told me that the only snack I can have is milk (three times a day). When I go back to the NUT this Friday, I want to ask why I can't have cheese or something else high in protein as my midmorning and midafternoon snacks.
So, my question to you, hunger people, is: do you do a solid food snack? Do you feel it helps tame your hunger? Any issues that you fell you are facing, due to the solid food snack?
Thanks!!
Lisa

I don't mean to question your surgeon, but I can't imagine going that long between our teeny tiny meals. I have at least one snack between breakfast and lunch, at least one between lunch and supper, and one in the evening. Now, keep in mind, I am almost three years post-op, but I have snacked all along because I was *hungry*! Early out, my snacks often were two bites of something, because that was all I could hold. And I lost just fine. Had reached my goal within a year. (I've had a 20-pound regain after an illness.) Best wishes!

Thanks for your post! No snacks is indeed hard... It's awesome to hear you reached goal so quickly, and still snacked...

WOW...he only let's you have milk? Do you work out? If I only ate 3 times a day, I would be miserable and hungry like you. I work out 6 days a week pretty strenuous so a snack mid am at the very least is a must for me. I am happy with my weight loss so something is working. I do not graze though. I plan my snacks and carry them in a bento box since I am in my car most of the day for work. I don't want to be tempted to eat something just for the sake of eating something. Usually it is string cheese OR 1 or 2 slices of deli meat OR a slice of Costco turkey meatloaf. Always it's a protein. It holds me over because sometimes my lunch comes at 1-130 pm depending on my patient load for the day. Talk to your NUT. If I denied my hunger that much, I would be setting myself up for failure and that is not a good thing.
Good luck to you.

I'm not a big fan of snacking... HOWEVER, solid foods hold up in our sleeves much longer than liquids. Skim milk as a snack makes absolutely no sense to me. A high protein snack like cheese is much better for you.
Current weight: 170 lbs.
Once I reach goal, this cow will be killed & eaten... 2 ounces at a time.
Total includes 56 lbs. lost on 2-month low carb pre-op diet. Start date 9/13/10.
Wow! That is a loooonnngggg stretch between meals. Early out I was eating every 2-3 hours. I don't want to question your surgeon either, but I can't believe they have you eating that far apart. I think a denser snack would help keep your hunger at bay. If you can have milk, why not have a bit of cheese or tuna, not anymore calories or fat than milk.
My surgeon told me that the ghrelin is produced when your stomach is empty, and that my lack of hunger is because I eat often. I snack eating a hard boiled egg of a string cheese between every meal. Sometimes twice if I feel I need more.
My food plan is high protein (70 grams minimum) low carb (30 - 40 grams) and calories between 600 and 800 daily. Milk has 12 carbs per cup, which would not fit into my food plan very well.
You might try eating something more solid between meals and see if it makes a difference in your hunger or weight loss.

The first shocker was how long you go between meals. I am only two weeks out, but I did have a band, and with it, I needed to eat about every 3 hours. We take in so little, it goes through, and then we need to eat again. And I agree...a liquid snack is no good. You are wasting calories on something that will not satisfy you for very long. And,honestly, I don't think of it as snacking. I think of it as eating a meal every 3-4 hours.
