Why is it that we aren't supposed to drink before meals?

So, I completely get why we aren't supposed to eat after meals.  It completely makes sense- we don't want to "push the food through".

However, why aren't we supposed to drink 30 minutes before a meal?  I guess I could ask my NUT that on Friday when I see her, if none of you know...

Thanks!

I am still pre op, but I just went through my diet class. With my surgeon's program we are allowed to drink right up til we eat, but we must wait an hour after eating to drink again.

It's just plain silly IMHO.  I drink up until the moment I eat.  Always have otherwise it would be difficult getting in all required fluid (especially early out).

Mine also allows you to drink up til you start eating, then you have to wait for one hour afterwards.

fills up your tiny tummy and leaves less room for your protein.  I must admit though, that I drink right up until I eat too.  Unless I drink ALOT before I eat, I am fine.

You don't want to drink before meals so that your stomach is totally empty and dry when your protein goes in.  You want your dense protein to form a plug at the top of your pyloric valve.  Even a little bit of liquid will mix with the protein and make it move through your stomach faster.

You want the food in your stomach as long as possible in order to keep that nice, full feeling as long as possible and to give the food the longest possible time to break down in your stomach juices before moving into your gut.  It's all about maximizing the absorption of your nutrients and not feeling hungry.

If I drink less than 30 minutes before a meal, I might as well not even try to eat.  I simply cannot get more than a couple of bites down.  Water is good for us, but we have to try to get in as much protein in as we can.

Also, I find that if I drink too soon after I eat, rather than "push the food through"... it backs up on me and I feel like I am gonna "Leggo my Eggo".

Some people can do it I guess, I just can't.  Maybe my tummy is too small to do it.  I don't know.  I just know, for me, no water 30 mins before and 30 mins after a meal is better than feeling like I am gonna hurl.

I read in a weight loss surgery book that we should stop drinking 15 minutes before a meal and wait an hour after a meal to drink again. My surgeon's office says stop drinking 30 minutes before a meal and wait 30 minutes after a meal. However, I can't eat, usually, for at least an  hour after a meal, so I tend to go by what the book says rather than what they say. Sometimes I drink right before a meal. I can't tell a difference, to be honest. But I wait a long time after a meal because drinking would just be too uncomfortable. The only times I can drink less than an hour after a meal is when I've had a small snack.
