decision time

Well, I made my decision and called the surgeon's office and told them.  I decided to go ahead with my original choice - VSG.  In the end of it, even though this surgery doesn't have the long track record that RNY does, I felt that the pros of VSG outweighted the cons.  Also, even though gastrectomy as a WLS doesn't have a long history, there have been many people who have had parts of their stomachs removed for a variety of medical conditions, for many years, so there is longer term general data and experience.  When push came to shove, I decided that I wanted the chance of a relatively more "normal" life.  By a "normal" life, I don't mean going out and eating lots of foods that brought me to this size in the first place.  I am referring to malabsorption, the potential of dumping, etc.  Also, some of the potential complications of RNY scared me.  I know VSG is a MAJOR surgery, with its own set of potential complications - I'm not in denial about that - but rearranging things as done in the RNY seemed too much.  Anyway, I am relieved, scared, ecstatic, and shaky all at the same time.  The clinical coordinator of the SWL program said it's normal to have moments of panic before surgery, so I guess I'm ok! :)  Thanks again for all of your support and words of wisdom

I hear you.  I'm new to all of this and am just starting to work on my decision.  I go for an orientation and consultation on Monday.  I'm excited.  I think in my head I've already decided to move forward.  But, I'm with you.  I don't want them messing with my intestines or having to re-plumb anything.  Just remove the excess thank you very much.  VSG seems like the perfect solution for me.  I don't really want anything inserted in my abdomen either, so that rules out the lapband.  I personally just have concerns with that one that it will eventually degrade.  Of course the docs say no, but how do they know what will happen 50 years from now?  I'm only 31, I could be alive 50 years from now pretty easily.  Plus, I need something very permanent.  So, I'm leaning very heavily toward VSG unless the doc has some reason why I shouldn't.  Congrats on making your decision!

Congrats on your decision!  I feel EXACTLY the same way you do and I've been driving my husband nuts over the past couple of weeks while I battle out the decision.   I've completed all my pre-op requirements and am waiting on insurance approval in order to choose a surgeon (from the same location) and schedule a date.

Keep me posted on your progress; we may be pretty close in our surgery dates!
