Hi! I had my pre-op vitals/anesthesiologist appointment today.  I got a call that says I am moderately anemic and that my surgeon will call me on Monday.  Does this mean I can't have surgery?  It is still 2 1/2 weeks away - I am hoping they will give me high test iron supplements.  Any one else have this issue pre- surgery?  Also...anyone else NOT have to do a 2 week pre-surgery liquid diet?

I had slight anemia but it did deter me from surgery. (had mine on 06/10/11 with minimal discomfort). I did not have the liquid diet but had to lose 15 lbs prior to surgery ( i lost 28 lbs). I am on iron pills (350% MDR) - not sure if they are helping or not. Good luck and let me know how it comes out.

Yes, my iron was low before my surgery, but I did not have to take iron supplements. They proceeded with the surgery anyway, and I've been just fine.

As far as the pre-surgery diet, I went on a full liquids diet one week before my surgery. I lost only about 1.5 lbs, though, and I've done just fine with that too.  I love my sleeve!  It's truly the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Best Regards,

I am severely anemic and this iscwhy I and my doctor chose the sleeve. Ihad to do infusions for 8 weeks and now I am slightly anemic. What I am trying to say that this is the best surgery for ppl with anemia

Thanks guys - your comments make me feel much better!  I am thinking about doing a week of liquid just to make sure I am good to go :)   i ran into a woman at GNC when I was picking up Isopure and she had just been sleeved.  She was 6 days out and looking really good -I hope that will be me in a few weeks!!!

I was also anemic too before surgery... and during the whole pre-op process... and well, for most of my life.  I originally went to my surgeon wanting RNY but due to my age and my anemia, he thought RNY was downright dangerous for me and that the sleeve was a much safer option.  (I outright refused to have a lapband.)  I take 2 iron supplements a day plus multivitamins with iron in them and was even taking the 2 iron supplements pre-op. I had my 3 month post op appointment this past week and I am still slightly anemic.

I also did not have a pre-surgery liquid diet... just the day before was liquids for me.
