Are all carbonated drinks out after surgery?

I gave up diet soda over a year and replaced it with seltzer. Do I have to give up seltzer after surgery? Is it because the carbonation can harm your stomach?

I am a pre-op so do not have experience with this but I have been drinking carbonated water drinks and asked the Nutritionist about this. She said it was a myth that you could not have carbonated drinks after surgery; however, for some time it may not feel good going down. Most people are fine with the drinks after a while though. She also said it is a myth that the carbonation is going to stretch the stomach.

My surgeon says no carbonation ever again.  I am ok with that, but know several people who wouldn't be.  Something about too many bubbles with it, and it could stretch the sleeve??? idk, just know they said never again.  Sorry.  Good luck with your journey.

It depends on your surgeon. I drink DIET soda occasionally and have no problems. My surgeon says everything in moderation. I don't drink carbonated drinks like I used to and I did have to wait about a month before I could even try a small amount of carbonated drinks. so yes you can probably have them again but just remember you can't drink them as often as before.

I'm 4 months out, and I've had about 6 carbonated beverages since surgery. I didn't try any for about 6 weeks out. It was a case of 'the lesser of two evils' so I opted for the Pepsi. I do drink it slowly and consider it an 'occasional' treat, nothing on a normal basis. Best wishes.

Every once in awhile I crave a Diet Coke.  I keep little bottles on hand and occasionally sip, sip, sip on once.  I couldn't do that 'til I was about a year out.  The carbonation was really uncomfortable.

It doesn't make sense to me that it would stretch the sleeve since they took the stretchy part of the stomach out.

Obviously you should do what your doctor/nutritionist suggests.

My doctor said no carbonated beverages.

I tried one or two along the way and have always suffered the consequences. Carbonation does not agree with my sleeve.

I'm almost 2 years post-op and do not drink carbonated beverages. The pain is not worth it.

I have not been following doctors orders and I drink carbonated drinks on occasion. I have to go very slow and only on an empty stomach otherwise I get gas pains and foamies.
