I am just passed my 3 month mark and my hair has started falling out.  Not in huge clumps but it's all over my clothes after doing my hair in the mornings.  Any suggestions on something I can do to lessen the amount I lose?

Honestly it's the luck of the draw, Karen.  Mine started before I was three months post-op and it hasn't let up at all (7 months post-op).
Make sure you get enough protein (at least 60 grams daily).  Some take Biotin.  Some use Nixon hair products.  It's all a waste if you ask me.  It will grow back!  Take care.  Hugs........Jennifer

There are lots of "recommendations" out there... but I'm not sure if any of them actually work (I haven't started losing mine, but from what I've read).

Nioxin shampoo
Scalp massage (see youtube video's for the how/whys)
multivitamins
biotin
plenty of protein. (My RNY BFF said hers didn't stop falling out until protein was about 100grams per day)

Let us know what works for you!

Nope, nothing but time will solve it.. Despite the hype, no shampoo, vites (unless you are deficient) or topical anything will stop it- it's a side effect of the stress of surgery and fast weight loss. I went through it the last time I lost a ton of weight quickly. It's called telogen effluvium. You may shed for several months.

Make sure your protein is at least 70+ and that you are getting adequate vites and essential oils (can't hurt) in you.. The growing hairs switched into the "off" position when you went through this stress, now they are shedding, and very soon you will start seeing tiny new hairs popping up.. this happens normally to us to a lesser degree all the time, but when you have something like a serious illness or WLS- MANY of the hairs switch to the "off" position and stop growing at the same time, then shed..

I feel your pain, mine started a week or so ago- and I have thinning hair to start with.. and have been on men's Rogaine foam for years to deal with my own hormonal hair issue, not even that helps the "big shed" as it's totally different process that leads to this loss.. Use shampoos that add volume in the meantime- and condition lightly to not weigh it down.. good mousse and stuff will help hide it as well.

I have also been on Biotin 5000mcg a day for a couple years, had no real great effect on my hair, but it's worth a shot to help when the regrowth starts!

I have tried everything. I do shed daily.

Our best friend right now with our hair loss (I have lost over 50%--started at 3 months and I am at 6 months now)----------our best friend is hats.  I bought my 3rd one the other day and just love it.  My first 2 were small, very petite, yet beautiful woven berets with flowers on one side of them.  Then  the other day I found a small black "baseball cap", but it is much smaller and more petite than a baseball cap, but it has a small brim, and a floral pattern woven into the fabric as well.  It fits much looser than a baseball cap and when they are loose, you can angle them and give yourself a rather jaunty look.  I think they were all made in China, but they cover my hair loss completely and I am able to pull some hair out along the hairline and it makes it look like I have my normal curly hair framing my face.  Go to the stores and try some on.  I wear one every time I go out now, and they make me look pretty darn stylish, even though I have never worn a hat in my life.  It makes a big difference out in public if you are not walking around terrified that someone may look down on your bald head.  I also bought a wig, but am not wearing it, as it was just too too--and my new hats do the job 100%.  I love my new little caps so much I will be wearing them even when my hair grows back in.

Hair loss usually occurs in months 4-7.  There's really nothing you can do about it, but it WILL stop and your hair will grow back in!  Not fun when it's happening, but well worth it for the weight loss you get :)

I have lost 60+ lbs since March (pre-op) and have thin hair to begin with, but I am now shedding like crazy!  If it gets too much worse I will have to seek professional help... seriously :-)

I actually went to a place for my 30th b-day (gift to myself!) that specializes in hair issues... wigs, partials, and thin hair in general, just for a cut/style... best $90 I ever spent on myself... if only because I know where to go if my hair gets that bad... she showed me some amazing options out there... for waht I need it would be around $700... better believe I plan on having that at least available on a credit card :-)

My only thing is that if I decide to do it I feel like I need to commit... I'm a high school teacher and the kids would totally notice if my hair magically changed overnight... I'll have to see what shape I"m in by August and take it from there!

I agree... it is a good trade off though!  I hope that I have some great regrowth... maybe by this time next year I"ll have a cute, semi-full short cut :-)

Aside from WL surgery, I am very much into hair care.
I always recommend garlic supplements and garlic shampoo to reduce shedding of hair.
I recommend Biotin (5,000 mcg a day minimum) to help with thickness and strength
And protein treatments every 6 weeks for strength and to reduce breakage (especially if the hair has any chemical treatment like color, perm, or relaxer)

Mine literally started the day after surgery..I will be 4 months out on the 16th of this month...It has finallly honestley slowed down in the past week.I have had days where i didnt shed hardley at all and i thought i was done but then the next day clumps and gobs, but i have went the past week with very minimal shedding keeping my fingers crossed it is time to slow down.I have literally lost half of my hair.Im hoping this time next year most of it will be back.I did cut it up around my neck it was passed my bra strap. It is depressing..I kept thinking if it gets worse im getting a lace front wig..I guess i could go for a feminine ball cap too for awhile..Mine was unnoticable until about 3 weeks ago my husband actually said..Omg honey your hair!He seen it wet while i was getting out of the shower yep looks really bad wet..I have been doing scalp massages, been using that doo grow oil about twice a week, take biotin when i remember and prenatal..All my labs are normal as of now so it must be the trauma and anesthesia. But if i had the choice to go back almost 80lbs and be fat and have hair or have this lost weight and thin hair...Id choose the thin hair and thinner body..But they say it does come back and sometimes even better than before...Good luck
