So the doctor advises to put 30min between when you eat and drink. Well a thought came to mind if your eating soup aren't you eating and drinking at the same time?

Yes, and that's why most dietitian's aren't big fans of soup once you're on regular foods.  The requirement is dense protein - and soup ain't dense!  And if you have soup after your dense protein, you're pushing your protein through your sleeve too quickly.  So, if you really like soup, I'd have it as a snack and count it as liquid.

Think of your sleeve as a long tube.  Your pyloric valve is at the bottom of the tube and releases the food into your gut.  You start eating dense protein first because you want to create a food "plug" at the top of your pyloric valve so that the food stays in your stomach as long as possible.  This helps you feel full and it lets your stomach juices break down your food longer.

If you add liquid to the mix, it will loosen the plug and allow food to pass through your pyloric valve more quickly.  So, you feel empty and hungry sooner and your food hasn't been broken down as much as it could have been.  This is why there's the no drinking rule before, during, and after meals.  You want your sleeve dry when you put the food in, dry (as possible) as it digests, and moving as slowly as possible into your gut.

From my own experience, I KNOW I stay full and satisfied longer if I don't drink.  The longer I hold off drinking, the longer I feel full.

I do occasionally have soup now that I'm in maintanence but I drink the broth first then eat the contents. My plan (you know how different they all are!!) now allows me to drink up until I eat but still have to wait 30 minutes after. I do the same thing now with whole grain cereal. Pour the milk on, wait a minute or two. Drink the milk then eat the rest. Crazy I know but if I dont drink the liquid first I get really bubbly/belchy (if thats a word) while I'm eating it!

I do have soups but they're substantial soups like Lentil, Split Pea, Black Bean, Clam Chowder. If I were having a watery soup like Tomato I would have it alone and not with dense protein.

When I have soup it's a whole meal an I do not combine it with othe things.

The nutritionist at my surgeons office pretty much said no soup, unless you take most of the broth off. She's good with chili but no other soups.

I would count soup as a liquid but be careful of how much you take in. Most soups do not have much protein in them with a lot of carbs and sodium.
