"Oh my, you're wasting away to nothing!"

This past weekend I saw my best friend's parents.  I saw them exactly 20 lbs. ago (isn't that funny how we used our weight loss to signify the passage of time and not months or years...).  Anyway, 20 lbs. ago they said I look great.  This past weekend I was greeted with, "Oh my, you're wasting away to nothing."  I am 5'7" and I currently weigh 145 lbs.  I am a healthy weight and athletic built.

I didn't take a comment like that as a compliment.  So I said back, "I'm hardly wasting away.  I'm at a healthy body weight for my height and I'm really into triathlons now."

Anyone else run into similar situations?  How did you handle it?

It amuses me when I hear this because first I was too fat, now I am too thin. Which is it? And too fat/too thin for WHOM!? I will not apologize for my appearance being displeasurable to others!

Where were they when my BMI was morbidly obese? Where would these people be who have too much to say if I came down with diabetes at age 27 from being overweight?

At this point I realized that brushing it off is best. Chances are that people are accustomed to seeing you heavier, your face fuller, and the weight loss can make you look "less healthy" even though its not rational. I just let it roll off my shoulders and walk away. As long as YOU feel healthy and are happy, that is what matters!

I think for most people the problem is perspective - you were very big, now you are very small.  If you had been that way the whole time, they would not even notice.   In addition, when there are gaps in between the time they see you - it is more shocking.  No gradual.  People could use some etiquette lessons, LOL.  They think that something like that is thrilling to a former fatty.  My boss's wife makes comments ALL the time.  It's super annoying.
