My doctor's rule is: protein always first, then carbs.  There is no "forbidden" food.  I have found that if I have almost any carb by itself, I don't get full easily.  So, if I want something like fruit, I will eat a little jerky (1 ounce) or something high protein first, then have a little fruit.  This works really good for me :)  I get "full" very quickly using this method.

Everybody has some science to back them up, but I am a human being with common sense...taste buds. An apple didn't make me fat. It just didn't. I got fat because I binged for emotional reasons on simple carbs, high fat meat, and high fat cheese. Period.

I learned a long time ago that a family size jug of orange juice in 4-5 days was too much sugar. I stopped it completely. I get that sugar mattters, especially during the losing phase. I'm willing to be more restrictive now, but not to the point of creating unnatural cravings.

For example, I was losing weight a couple of years ago when this crazy trainer told me to stop eating sweet potato and banana. I was not eating them daily, but I did eat them a couple of times per week for their potassium- oh, and for their taste. He also told me to stop eating all fruit. I had one serving of fruit per day- 2 at the most on a rare day. When I followed his suggestion, guess what happened?  I became a cookie and cake junkie. Everybody who knows me, knew that I was not a cookie and cake fanatic. I also started eating candy bars regularly. I hate that I ever listened to that stupid advice. Until then, I was doing great with lean meat, vegetables, with occasional brown rice, whole wheat pasta and fruit.

Now, most of my meals are protein only or protein with lettuce or pico de gallo. But I know that I have not been derailed if watermelon crosses my lips. I also know that white flour can lead to a slippery slope, but that has never happened with an apple.

My nut did not advocate low carb. If they had it wouldn't have made a difference tbh. I wanted normal and I am gonna have it. I am sorry if it offends, but low/no carb is NOT normal to me. Nuts and drs are just people, and they all disagree anyway, so I take them with a grain of salt honestly.

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

I eat some carbs...I have to. I followed  the no carb rule and felt like absolute **** Without "some" carbs, vegetables and small amounts of fruit, my digestive system just completely stops functioning properly. I had to find this out through trial and error, staying in close contact with my nurse, and figuring out what works for me.

I talk to a lot of people about to start their WLS journey and would never reccomend this plan to them. This is what works for me. I really do think this is a diet very specific to each individual.

Sass I think you're doing phenominal and you're obviously doing what works best for you!

My NUT states everything in moderation. She doesn't restrict anything. I restrict but if I want a little slice of cake or something like that on occasion, I dont worry about it. Everyone is different and you have to do what works for you eventhough that might not work for someone else.

Saying absolutely no carbs I feel is ridiculous.. there are carbs in lots of healthy foods.. Saying no carbs means no veggies, no fruit, no wholesome grains all of which have good micronutrients that are beneficial to your body.    Anyone, NUT or otherwise that feels carbs are nothing but bad is not someone I would want to listen to.  That's my opinion.

So far, I really like my NUT approach. Right after surgery, up to soft foods, it is protein only. Starting with soft foods, which I started today, I can add cooked vegetables. When I am on regular diet, really there is no food restriction. But they emphasize, protein, veggies, fruit then whole grains. They also state that we are not on a "diet", and to make good choices.

The other night I did have maybe a spoonful of unsweetened applesauce, I was so hungry for fruit. It tasted too sweet though, so I am curious when I can have fruits in a couple of weeks if I will think some are too sweet then. The NUT has said for every five bites of protein, then can have one bite of carb.

It really does amaze me all the differences in opinions of the different clinics.

My Nut. says protein first, then veg and if room you can have carbs.  But nothing is off limits.  She does however say to limit refined sugars and processed foods and that the carbs from that are not going to help me lose weight.

Sassy.....straight up......your NUT.......well that ***** is just crazy!!

Eliminating carbs from your diet is not healthy. Neither is filling up on white, starchy, bad carbs.

My diet is very balanced and I eat around 1200 calories daily that includes about 100g of carbs from foods such as milk, fruit, whole grains and tsk tsk even the occasional naughty carbs. I feel like I eat like a normal healthy thin person. I've lost steadily with no stalls and I'm not worried about maintenance because I didn't get here trying a radical approach.
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. ~2 Chronicles 15:7

***NOTE: I am in maintenance.....If you are in WL mode....I would recommend under 30-40 grams of carbs per day.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I have no science to back this up.....not doctor recommend.....nuthin......

Just something I read a while back......

In maintenance I made a few adjustments.....

Two basic things Dr.C told me to do in starting Maintenance

- Get in more fiber

- More vigorous exercise

So, I stay on WL plan.....about 80%........I play with 20%

What I seem to have ended up with....(for now) is a pretty basic and simple formula. I didn't make it up.....I just realized it matched what I was trying to do.

3-2-1

This is a "rough" guide for my daily eating.........not guide for every meal.

3 parts protein

2 parts veggies

1 part carbs

To eat this way for the daily totals to come out correct I must eat veg only snacks (which I love!)

Again.....this is what I do......not telling anyone to do it !
