My only complication after VSG - girls only!

Hi ladies,

TMI warning!

I am almost 6 weeks post op and have been on my period for almost 2 1/2 weeks.  It has been really heavy and lasted WAY too long.  I was crampy and clotting a lot.  Not fun - worst period I have ever had!  So I went to my gyno today and he put me on progestin for 12 days to stop the bleeding.  He said it was my body's way of freaking out from having surgery - like the 3 week stall wasn't bad enough!  He is hoping that as I continue to lose weight my periods will become more regular and my iron levels will improve and I won't need supplements anymore.  Fingers crossed that this works.  Very much relieved to get checked out and wanted to share my experience with you all.  I have read that a lot of women have issues with their period after surgery.  If this is the only complication I have then I will take it!

thanks for listening!

I know exactly what you mean! I had a period two weeks after my surgery that lasted 7 days and one week prior to surgery I was on my period and was thinking, "YES, I dont have to worry about my period for another3-4weeks!" Yeah I was wrong and on top of that I felt like sh**, was cramping and bleeding heavy. I havent had cramps in 7 years, I  was use to not taking medicine for it, I only used 1 pad per day and I was so used to being on my period for 3 days. But now, Im looking at 5-7 days, taking Alieve 3 times a day, my period comes every 21 days (without any deviation) and Im using 3 pads per day, which is causing me to spending more money bc 1 packet of 36 pads would last me 5 months. Hopefully, it will get better as I lose more weight, plus the cramping has started to subside.

I actually have an reason why! I was told when they fill you up with gas your ovaries are slammed against your sides and the result is bruising and you period.

I had not had a period in years! ( I have the Implanon ) and right after surgery, I started my period. It sucked, but I thought my body was out of whack, so I dealt with it.
Fast forward to month 2, and I just started AGAIN! This sucks!!

I know that is not what your problem is. Your problem is that you are having a long period. But I just wanted to share my whacky story with you. I guess I have gotten spoiled, with no period!

I hope yours gets back to normal soon!!

I have Implanon, too! I hadn't had a period for 6 months and then it came back with a vengeance. I think I'm regulated again now, but it was a beast for a while!

my periods went NUTS for about 6 months straight after surgery. My surgeon explained to me that hormones (estrogen etc) are fat-soluble, which means they dissolve well in fat and get stored in the fat in your body. So as you burn through the fat and lose weight quickly, the hormones that were stored in that fat are suddenly being re-released and making your periods go all wacky. My surgeon said "You will be hyper-fertile during this time, so if you have sex, use 3 forms of birth control Seriously, you'll get pregnant from a strong breeze!" And I did find that when my weight loss slowed down and leveled out, my periods went back to normal. So just hang in there.

I totally hear ya! I'm 6 1/2 months out, had my last pre surgery cycle right before so I was relieved that I'd at least not have to deal during recovery but nope! Had a week and a half one 3 weeks later! From then on, I have cycles between 18-24 days and they last a full week when before it was 28 days, insanely regular and lasted 5 days. This current one was 21 days and has lasted 11 days and counting...I did get dark, old discharge (sorry, TMI) and had never had that before. I'm hoping that from this point on my hormones have gotten rid of all the unhealthy stuff that being overweight causes in there and they'll start evening out again.

I was always super heavy. Post op though, just insande. I ended up getting an ablation, and thank goodness that took care of the periods. I was dealing with low blood pressure though. Just thought I would throw that out there in case it continues to be an issue for you.
