Have you talked with her about it?  You shouldn't blame yourself because she didn't keep a secret she was asked to keep.  And you deserve an apology.  But with the co-workers already knowing now, I'd just keep my chin up and still only give minimal information if I didn't want to discuss it.  And if you feel really strongly about it, take it to her superior.  It may not help you, but it may help the next person who needs to confide in their supervisor.

One thing I've learned in my 45 years, PEOPLE BLAB!

Thats why I plan to tell nobody at work so that I don't deal with this. Luckily for me my weight is coming off slowly. Good luck to you when you go back to work.

You don't know for sure it was she who spilled the beans. She may of had to tell her supervisor and SHE is the one. I would NOT contact HR and complain under these cir****tances. I would try and see it as benefit. Now you will not have to explain your weight loss, and usually, despite the obviou**** to your privacy, having things in the open makes it simpler in the long run. WLS is becoming more and more popular, and you may start a trend and/or be able to help others. I would try and accept it with grace.

I kinda had the same thing happen only at home, i asked my family (husband and daughter) to keep this among us, he told his dad who usually can't keep a secret and my daughter told a friend who i'm sure told her mother who is a friend of mine who has never had a weight issue and is very anti- WLS. i didn't want anyone to know because i don't want the pressure of everyone watching my progress and i don't want anyone questioning my decision to do what i feel is right for me. So far no one else has said a word, and if they do i plan to tell them that my health is my business, thanks for the concern but please don't feel the need to discuss it. I hope your coworkers choose to respect your privacy when you return to work if not don't be afraid to be firm about not wanting to discuss it. You're doing great!!!!! keep up the the good work.

I used to be in HR  too and if she told  ... you have a law suit!   But embrace it  ...You decided to do this just as we have...don't be ashamed!  We are all trying to do something to better our lives. Who can say  anything bad about that!   They could only KEEP TALKING about those that don't!  I'm embracing my changes ... It gonna be evident soon enough  with the sudcen weight loss...I have surgey this week and I told EVERYONE Boss included  even on FaceBook!     I'm proud to have made the Not so easy decision to do this.  I hope you will see your doing this for YOU not THEM! :-) EMBRACE IT! LIVE IT!  LOVE IT

"friend of mine who has never had a weight issue and is very anti- WLS. "

This always blows me away....who are these skinny people who are so anti WLS? What business is it of theirs? They don't know what it's like, they think we can just stop eating, screw our heads on straight and just be done with it. AS IF!! They don't know the struggles, the shame, the continued deprivation, the self hatred, ANYTHING about being fat. Why in the world would anybody, especially a thin person, have an issue? I wish I could send all the super morbidly obese people who walk past my door all day to surgery!! I don't even know them!! WTF? I would think she wouldn't have a problem with removing tumors or treating diabetes or whatever, but no WLS? Huh. Amazingly narrow minded.

Oh for crying out loud!  If anybody at work asks about your weight loss surgery, just say "What weight loss surgery?  I was out for a sex change operation!"

That usually shuts them up.

Good luck,

Fred

Even if she is on her way out the door you need to notify HR. She broke the law! If for any reason other than to save future people from having a similar experience. Pave the way to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. That is so wrong!
