Hello!  I was just curious when counting carbs do you count the full amount or subtract out fiber to get NET carbs?

I think most people are counting net carbs.

Carbs...........the net carb thing is just enough to put you over.....

I do think the net carb comes into play more in maintenance when things are more forgiving and you have already lost the weight....

So Frisco, if my Quest bar that I eat for a meal sometimes has 22 grams of carbs, 18 of which are fiber and 2g is sugar.  Is this someting you would stay away from in the losing phase?  I really have been working hard to keep bad sugar carbs out, but I know how some packages can fool us.

Personally.... I would find another bar...... That's just me with not a great understanding of the net carb conversion.

On another note.....as long as you count total carbs and stay within your daily carb count you should be good.

During WL I would rather have the comfort of eating carbs that are hidden in sauces or that are in breading and veggies than to eat it in a designer bar.

That's just me... not sayin I'm right or wrong.....just telling you how I interpreted it and how it effected my other eating. I see your losing weight.... so you can test yourself as all people tend to have different levels of carb sensitivities.

Ann, I know you didn't ask me, but I am going to butt in anyway.  To be honest, I found that eating protein bars in general is not the best idea during the heart of the losing phase.  I started to lose much faster and more continuously when I switched to just eating solid protein and veggies with a little bit of dairy here and there.  I especially found this helpful when I needed to get to goal and those last few pounds just wouldn't budge.

I totally agree with you and Frisco.  I prefer to eat my food and I have noticed that the bars go down fast and easy (bad sign, usually a triigger flag for me).  Sometimes though when I am out on bike rides (I usually ride 30-40 miles at a time) I just can't eat enough beforehand to carry me through and a bar gives me a boost (and it is small enough to fit in my bag).  I think I will limit them to those days and stop using them as meal replacements on any ole day.

Thank you for the help!

That's the way I used them too.  I have a bar and almonds for emergency use only.  On another note, did you know that sprouted almonds only have about 2/3 of the calories of regular almonds but all the protein and nutrition that regular almonds have?  They have been very useful for me when I need something quick and easy to carry around.  I love the lemon flavored ones.

Your colon would probably appreciate the fiber -  it depends upon whether you are having any of those issues that require more fiber in your diet, as many do post-op. Sometimes you have to set the low-carb mania on the back burner and do what's right nutritionally. That said, as Elina touches on, it is usually better to get our nutrients from real foods rather than supplements, protein shakes or bars, but sometimes that's not convenient with hectic schedules. But if your body needs fiber, it needs fiber, which is an evil carb, irrespective that some published diet plan says it's a no-no. It's your body vs. some piece of paper.
