mom vs dietician
so here's my scenario....my dietician gave me a handout with printed progression of what my diet should be week to week
1. clear liquids
2. add milks and cream soups
3. pureed
4. soft foods
5. regular foods
i called my dietician today for advice on what to buy while shopping for the next week cause i start week 2 diet tomorrow. well she said to go ahead and try yougurt, pudding, runny grits and runny oatmeal. she says i need to "try out" different foods to see what i can tolerate. however, the paperwork she gave me says i cannot start yogurt and puddings and hot breakfast foods until week 3. mom says i should go by the paperwork. but don't the dietician know what she's talking about? shes had many many WLS patients come through her office and theyve never had a death or a single complication! so what do i do?
the paperwork also has a sample menu for what a day should look like. for example tomorrow during week 2 diet it says
breakfast: SF hot cocoa w/ 1% milk
lunch: low sodium cream soup
dinner: low sodium cream soup w/ protein suppliment
however, in the hospital, they were giving me soup 3 meals a day instead of 2. and my dietician is telling me to taste other stuff (yogurt grits etc). i said i should try and do what the dietician tells me but my MOM is telling me if you don't follow the paperwork like it says then you're goin down the wrong path and not gonna lose like you should etc etc.
im just so confused! advice? anyone else have this problem?

I wouldn't eat the grits, or hot cereals. It's really gross thinned out, and well the carbs suck.
BUT, if you can try pudding, ask if you can have some greek yogurt, throw some sugarfree syrup, jam, or instant pudding powder in the greek yogurt and that's a better choice over just plain pudding/yogurt with sugar/fruit/carbs due to the higher carb count on the greek yogurt.
However, I would call for major clarification.
Full liquids were allowed at the 3 week mark which sounds familar to your plan and all the foods you listed were on my full liquid diet along with greek yogurt.
The liquid post-op diet is for healing purpose. Eating some yogurt or sugar free pudding isn't going to stop your weight loss. I even drank regular gatorade and still dropped weight. You will more than likely have the 3 week stall just like the rest of the 98% of WLS patients, but it's not because you ate 1oz of yogurt/pudding or soup. It's because that's what happens post-WLS.

If it were me I would either call her back and ask why you have conflicting information or merely go with what is written. If something does happen from you following her adive, you don't have that documented anywhere that she told you to do that. You do however, have it documented that you should be following what the paper says. So, if something does happen the office will cover there bottom by saying you were not in complience with the written directions you were given. I know it sucks, but I stick to what is written unless I am given something with new written instructions on it. If you want to go with what she said, have her fax you something with her signature on it so that you are covered too. Good luck!!
i agree. i should go by whats written in stone. but id like to trust my dietician. she did ask if id have any nausea or vomiting. ive had NONE since day 1. she said thats great and i tihnk thats why she wants me to progress to my new diet... ill ask them tomorrow for a definite answer. thanks so much
We all get some handouts, in various forms, from our docs on the progression of their programs - some docs are going to be fairly flexible on how closely those instructions should be followed, as we are all different and will progress at different rates - some will have a hard time with fluids for an extended time while others will have no problem progressing from soft foods to solids fairly rapidly - while other docs will tend to treat all of their patients the same. My docs program started us on the puree/mushy foods in the hospital progressing to soft foods as tolerated, and likewise moving to more solids as tolerated, usually in the second month, but that's a variable. I was working into softer solids (chicken, beans, etc) after a couple weeks, and I was being told to add some veg since I was getting more than the requisite protein. It sounds like you are progressing well and you nut is recoginzing your need to start experimenting ahead of the published schedule.

Wife's DS - 5/05 w Dr. Robert Rabkin VSG on 5/9/11 by Dr. John Rabkin
Id just like to say how crazy the variables are in these first few weeks of diets between surgeons, you'd think they could get together and agree on some things, my Dr has had me on very liberal full diet since day 2 and some things I can tolerate and some I don't, you quickly learn, but I don't think my WL has slowed, you would think they would have standards though, but your right Id follow my Dr advice. your doing great, keep up the good work.

I'm Still a work in progress, I wont give up the quest to reclaim my life, I will be whole again someday!
