I hear you Frisco and feel your pain...I think the relative ease with which people are getting the surgery may have something to do with it.  I was self-pay and I don't write a $12,000 check every day so I'm gonna make damned sure I do this right!  My hope is that the newbies will listen to the vets - not just hear but actually listen to the advice, tips and solutions offered.  That's what I did when I was new and continue to do now...Chill out and just keep putting it out there, some will ignore and some will take it to heart.  We can't help everyone, but if we help one, that's a victory!

Peace out!

Deb,

I also self-paid and made it a point to capitalize on my investment. I followed the eating plan my doctor gave me, reached my weight loss goal and have maintained without a lot of effort because I still pretty much follow the same eating plan.

It's funny to see people consuming 60 grams of carbs daily and complaining about stalls.

Continued success,
George

I wasn't self pay, but I didn't put myself through hell...TWICE...to go back to old unhealthy habits and gain weight back.  I got to goal in less than six months by following my doctors rules and common sense.  I didn't eat solids for the first three weeks after surgery, I progressed slowly to mushy protein and stayed the hell away from carbs.  Even now at goal I still stay away from carbs because I know they're my trigger food and they're what got me up to 275 pounds to begin with.

I try not to judge people but some people don't realize that WLS isn't a magic bullet, it's is just a tool to help us, we have to do the work, especially after the honeymoon period.  And the honeymoon period is NOT the time to experiment.  It's the time to follow the rules to the letter.

I am a newbie and just got my insurance approval & surgery date this morning. I just finished four months of instruction in preparation for this. My insurance company insists on that instruction. At first I grumbled about having to spend all that time taking weekly classes, meeting with a nutritionist & going to the gym, but I quickly realized the value of this and am now glad I had that opportunity. I also bought two books on WLS & read them cover-to-cover; they helped me a lot & would strongly recommend this to others.

This being said, I am grateful for the advice & support of all of you on this forum who have already walked this path. I will do my best to remember everything I've learned & follow my doctor's instructions. Even though my insurance company is paying the majority of the bill, I am still going to be paying around $2,000 for this, and like you say, that's a big investment. In addition to the money, there is the pain of surgery & all those weeks of liquids & baby food. I'm not going to screw up what I know is my last chance.

It's a shame that not all doctors are as diligent as mine about educating & preparing their patients. But ultimately, it is up to the patients to take responsibility for their own bodies & do some research before making such an important decision as having WLS. IMHO.

Well, I hope that I'm the one that all you "Vets" help with your sound advice. I've been "doctoring" for this surgery for almost a year now. I only got on this website for the last several months. I can tell you that I'm walking into my surgery TOMORROW with a ton of knowledge and support.

Through the Beaumont system here in MI....I have been seeing NUTS, Exercise Therapists, Shrinks, Doctors, Surgeon, Support Groups....I have my book with strick guidlines as to what to eat, how to eat, not to eat....chew, chew, chew, sip, sip, sip, walk, walk, walk. There are sooo many people pulling for me...I wouldn't think to let them down.

The world is my oyster and I've been given a gift....I'm not about to throw it away on some garbage. I can't believe what some of these people say on this site...it amazes me that they haven't learned a thing and are always "testing" their Sleeve. I can't say it's going to be easy but I'm going to give it one heck of a try

September 1st....my VSG Day!! And I'm stickin' to it!!
