Hmm.. maybe because it's not that noticeable until you get into the higher numbers? If that makes sense? So people don't even notice another's loss until they are 30+ pounds into it, and then anything after that sort of "stands alone" as its own number.

I've lost almost 22 pounds and am only 5'3 (started at 240) and no one has noticed yet. Or if they have, they haven't said anything! Strange. It's ok with me though, because I didn't tell anyone at work about the surgery so a gradual, less noticeable loss is better for explantion reasons. haha

I would just say "YEAH, about 20 lbs. Thanks!"

I agree with the above post, 20 lbs is a lot for "regular" people...so take it as a compliment.

Also, the fact that a MAN even noticed should also be celebrated !

Congrats on your loss!

I think that since society doesn't impose such a need to agonize over weight on us men (and part of the reason we don't get WLS as readily as women, too), our calibration on weight estimates aren't as fine as womens'. Certainly, I can pick up on the signs that someone I know has lost some weight, but I, too, am fairly clueless on the magnitude. He may also have been conservative in estimating low - if he had guessed 100lb (or even 80), what are the chances, in his estimation, that he would get a response like "what makes you think I needed to lose THAT much!?!"

Hasn't figuring out the other half of our species always been one of our biggest challenges? Congratulations on the loss, and in getting noticed at all, LOL!

I don't think I would take offense. Men just don't get it. I've lost over 100lbs and some people are just saying, wow you've lost alot of weight. Aww yea, I have it's 100 lbs that I had to lose for people to notice? It used to make me mad but I don't care anymore. I guess I wasn't that close to those people anyways. Lol. I also think some men don't now what to say. Bc if they comment some women could take it wrong and think they are hitting on them. I had a young man say to me the other day that he wanted to tell me something but didn't want me to get mad at him. His comment was " wow you look really good now barb". I just thanked him and smiled.

I am laughing so hard. I totally get it! I am still waiting for my surgery next month, but once I lost 60 lbs and someone commented "Oh, you lost a little weight".....REALLY?! LOL! You are doing great! Proud of what you've achieved.

all of the comments have made me laugh because I too work in a HS in the athletics deptmartment. So far to date, I am down almost 30 lbs and all I got was "losing weight, you look good."  Personally I think men are afraid to say anything regarding our weight because some people are so sensitve.  would you have rathered "wow, you look great, did you lose a small child?"  Take it as a complement since he did in fact notice.

Great Job!
