Your Relationship with Food and a Healthy Pizza Recipe

Hi Everyone!
I wanted to answer JB in his post, but I wanted to share my recipe for pizza...so I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone.

My relationship with food and how it changed after my surgery was a major hurdle for me and I'm sure for a good majority of us. The joy you got from eating 2 helpings of mouth watering Lasagna is gone. Eating a full steak and all the trimmings is just not possible anymore. Your "go to" ice cream when life sucks just can't happen now. All of this is true.

That being said, we have to look at food as sustenance and fuel now. Our bodies need to have what food provides us without the bad side effects of bad choices. Your relationship with food is dramatically different, but you still need to enjoy what you eat. It's important to take the time to make your food look attractive and appetizing. You can still eat SOME of the things you love...just work on "healthing" them up! Even before surgery...my Brother and Sister in Law had us over for grill pizza. I've tweaked it a little to make it healthy for me and make it in the oven, but the premise is the same. Frisco has done some AMAZING Lavash pizzas...and this is the same premise. My Husband...the unusally freakish guy who loves all crap food and stays thin even likes these little pizzas!!

Pre-heat oven set at 450 (I use a pizza stone...but you can use a cookie sheet too)
1 small low carb tortilla
spray a quick shot of olive oil cooking spray on one side and crisp the tortilla in the oven, sprayed side down...then add to your liking:

2 tbls of Pizza sauce
Turkey pepperoni slices (70% less fat than normal pepperoni)
black olive slices
onions
mushrooms
Add a sprinkle of reduced fat mozzerella cheese and sprinkle a little Italian seasoning on top!
Pop it back in the oven till the cheese is hot and bubbly and enjoy!

Of course you can tweak this to your liking. Chicken and BBQ sauce with reduced fat chedder is good too!! I can eat just about half of this...and I eat the other half for breakfast!!
Hope you enjoy and love the food you eat!!

Thank you for this post Heidi!  I actually bought the low fat tortillas but didn't know how to go from there.  I am going to try it tonight...and I think my kids will love them too!

I am trying sooo hard to like food again.  I am a little over 3 months out and I have been losing like mad.  I am not complaining, but I really could care less if I eat or not.  I don't even enjoy chewing anymore.  Food feels gross in my mouth.  I am sure it is just a phase, but quite frankly if I could just drink shakes all day (and I must admit sometimes I do) I would be fine with it.  My doc not so much.

Its post like these that remind me that food will be my friend again, just in a different way.  I am convinced that my aversion to it has more to do with the mourning of the way I "used" to eat.  I now need to develop a new relationship that will bring back some of the enjoyment of eating without the other head games that got me fat.

It will get better Ann! I went through that mourning phase too. I'm finding that the more recipes I can find that my Husband also likes works best for us! I got tired of making two meals! I'm trying to find ways to make my recipes and get them as healthy as I can! Like I said, my Husbands diet is like a science experiment gone wrong! LOL! He can still wear the same suit he wore 30 years ago. I know...it's just not fair! I'm pretty sure he's stopping at the gas station to feed his corn dog addiction!

Try www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com for some new fun recipes! She has some great ones in there!

Best of luck in finding new ways to enjoy eating!!

How much of that can you eat? The whole Tortilla? That sounds SOOO delish. I just had surgery and am barely getting the clear liquids to go down. Tried protein (Unjury) in water and nearly upchucked after about a teaspoon. EWW. I know it'll get better though.

On a side note- about a week before surgery I went to Oggis Brewery out here in San Diego and saw that their menu had a healthy option (less than 500 cals I think) and the options were lavash pizzas! That was what I ordered. They were also incidentally half off because they are considered an appetizer and it was during their happy hour time. Let me tell you, these things were SO delicious. I wonder though what the rest of the nutritional content looked like.

I can't wait to try your recipe a while from now! Even one bite would be worth the making!

Awwww...you're in that phase thats the toughest, but this too shall pass Hun!!
When you do get to mushies, your food world will open up so much more!!

I'm 8 months out and I can eat about half...but I love the left overs for breakfast!

These little low carb tortillas can be used to make a breakfast tortilla too....scrambled eggs...cheese...turkey sausage...salsa

I don't use these every day...and when I do...I keep the rest of the days carbs low...but it fixes my bread cravings!!
