Documentation on steroids to help fight for VSG
Does anyone have good documentation that if steroids are needed, RNY is not the surgery of choice but VSG is?
I have been trying to find a good source that I can print and take to my surgeon. Here in Ontario it is hard to get the VSG because they think the RNY is the gold standard.
Thank you

Wow. My PCP at my HMO told me that I wouldn't be a good candidate for lap band or for RNY because of my need for prednisione a couple times a year for asthma. I can't understand your surgeon not being the first one to tell you that. When I met my surgeon he asked me why I wanted a VSG verses a RNY, and I told him about my steroid use for chronic asthma, and my need for NSAIDs for arthritis. He immediately agreed that a VSG was the best choice for me. Actually he had already read my chart, and had come to the same conclusion, but he wanted to see what MY reasons were.
There was no voice at all pulling for a RNY, ever. I would just google something like "weight loss surgery and prednisone use" and look for the medical studies.

I'm don't have VSG but I was just bored and browsing various forums so I hope it's OK if I jump in here. Steroids are not a problem with RNY. I think you are thinking of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS. If you need those, RNY would be a bad choice for you. But if you need steroids, those are OK with RNY.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
