I just received my pre-op labs last week and I was very low in vitamin D (19 to be exact).  My Dr. put me on 50,000 IU 2x a week for 10 weeks.  I asked the nurse if this was common, she said about 80% of their pre-op patients are vitamin D deficient.  I know you're post-op, but the vitamin D topic has me a bit concerned now.  I'm curious to know more about this.  I was also in the sun A LOT this summer....even went to the Bahamas!  So I guess the sun theory didn't work for me.

You don't need a dr's visit or an rx. 50,000 IUs once a week and you will feel tons better! I really feel the difference when I forget.

I am was are deficient in D as of my 2 years labs...I forget what 3 year said and now I await 4 year.  I'm in the process of changing all my tablet vitamins into capsules for better breakdown and absorption.

I work for a group of physician's who prescribe Vit D regularly...(GI and Rheumatology). It's not well known but you can get an OTC Vitamin D3 that is a once  a week supplement fairly easily. You ask the pharmacist for Maximum D3, it's ususally kept behind the counter because they are to educate the patient that you only take it one time a week. It's 10,000 units, and depending on what the Vit D levels return we either prescribe the 50,000 units or have them go get the Maximum D3. My levels were low pre-op and post op, got the Maximum D3..once a week and everything is okie dokie now. The easiest place to purchase them is at Wal-mart...btw...I have to take it with food or it upsets my tummy, with a little food it's all good.

I also took a Rx dose of Vitamin D last year;  I took 50,000 iu weekly for 14 weeks.  That brought my Vitamin D level to the normal range,  and I continue to take 4000 iu daily and stay in the normal range.
