seriously icky tummy troubles. (tmi)
i am about to lose my mind over this constipation thing. i've tried milk of magnesia, prep h for pain, liquid stool softener, metamucil, etc... mirilax is not on my dr.'s recommended over the counter meds but it has worked for me in the past so i just think i'm going to suck it up and try it. i've only been going to the bathroom once or twice a week after excruciating hours of sitting on the toilet, sitting in sitz baths, etc... please tell me i am not the only one dealing with this. i'm now sitting at work and it's almost unbearable from all the pressure of having to go. :(
Have gone several times this morning but so painful and hard to push out (tmi, i know). I've read a lot of people use mirilax after vsg so i'm assuming it'll be ok.

All Miralax does is increase the water content of the stool- it is the safest (safe for daily use, for life if needed) stool softener.. it is not a stimulant, and not habit forming, please use it. Also, you may want to look into magnesium supplements once you get things in order. Mira takes a few days to work - again, all it does is pull more water into the stool- make sure you are drinking a lot, and if needed - get yourself a suppository in the meantime. You don't want a hemorrhoid!
I had issues early out pretty bad, needed Mira daily and then 1/2 dose daily until I switched calcium supplements from my chewable citrate to Vitalady's Tender Cal/Mg/D3.. there's enough Mg in those capsules (you take about 8 a day to meet our needs) that I never needed Mira again.. I just take my Benefiber and calcium.. in fact, I had to get a plain cal citrate powder as I was going too much with just the tender-cal.. Good luck.

Jessica,
Until you are back to a more fiberous diet (when you get closer to goal) you will probably need some help with fiber. For now, a glycerine suppository might do the trick.
But for maintenance so you are not so constipated, you may need a daily dose of something.
I use a spoonful of generic benefiber in my protein drink daily in the morning, and also take 2 or 3 colace daily at night. I started with 1 colace and added until it was too much and then backed off to 2 daily. Sometimes that wasn't enough, so I alternate 2 one day and then 3.
You should start something and stick with it until you get some results, and then adjust as needed. Unfortunatly, this is a side effect of the higher protein, lower carb diet. Eventually you will be eating more fruits and vegetables which will help.
Good luck, hang in there.

Thanks all, I just texted my surgeon as well to double check he would allow miralax. but truthfully even if he says no i may take it. I've always had intestinal issues (IBS, colonoscopies to rule out colitis, fissures, etc...) but the constant of this is what is driving me crazy. i feel good for a few days, then right back to where i started.
i appreciate everyone's advice.

I am 2 weeks out from surgery and have been taking a chewable probiotic daily and adding benefiber to everything ( 1 tsp added to protein shake or anything else liquid or thick). Also started taking Mg and I am fine. I have always suffered from constipation so i am trying to head it off since I cant eat the fiber i am used to eating. I am saving the Miralax for when I really need it - it does work. Good luck - I know it can make your life miserable.
Again, thanks so much everyone for the responses. It helps to know what works for others. You would think I would've known enough to fix it before it was broken, but I was feeling good and therefore didn't think about it much. It's amazing how one thing can make you feel so horrible all over. I'm supposed to be at work for another 3 hours (already did 5 hours) and debating whether or not i can make it. i work in a large enough place that i can pretty much just hang out and not be noticed therefore don't really HAVE to be doing anything, however if i leave early will have to use vacation/sick time that i used pretty much all of it from when i was out for the surgery.
for now i'm sitting on my one leg underneath me to relieve some pressure and using baby wipes i brought with me. ugh.
just whining now, sorry. :)
