Does anyone not eat their required protein and still do well?

My dr never gave me a set amount of protein to eat just 2/3 protein and 1/3 veggie, 3 meals a day and no snacks, and of course stop eating at the first sign of fullness

It's all very individual. And there is no set formula that can apply to every individual, either. Even when I eat 150g protein from food daily, my hair would start to fall out, so I would have to add a shake each day.

Also, remember that, as VSG patients, you may not absorb all the protein you consume. No, you don't have anything bypassed, so you don't have malabsoprtion in the way someone with an RNY or DS would, but your stomach has been made smaller and tube-shaped, which has two major effects: (1) the shape of the stomach funnels food more quickly through the stomach, allowing less time spentin the stomach to be broken down and/or absorbed, and (2) smaller stomach means less gastric acid for breakdown of stomach contents (plus many are taking acid reducers on top of that to prevent reflux).

I do have a little bit of intestinal bypass, but by now, at more than 2.5 years out, I likely have no macronutrient intestinal malabsorption remaining. And yet, I do best when I'm consuming 150-200 grams of protein daily (and that was before pregnancy - during pregnancy, I've recently been getting less, and my hair is back to falling out a bit more than usual).

Even if I eat *way* over my minimums, if I do not DRINK 3 shakes a day, my serum protein labs crash into the ****tah.

I stopped drinking them when I did not have to anymore, and then got my 1 year labs and I was a whole point below low normal. I had had labs done 1 month before surgery that showed my serum protein mid "normal" range.

I thought I was losing hair still because I just was, I am self pay and I get full labs drawn once a year.  If I had had 3 month or 6 month labs, that would have helped me to see my trend sooner and pay attention.  *** Directlabs

Anyway, my point is, The Protein Issue is not in The Glossy VSG Brochure I got :} , but there are some cases (me and a few other here on the board) where protein math about dense protein does not matter, we need to drink some portion of it to stay within normal levels, so if you are intentionally not making protein goals for whatever reasons, it would serve you well to get your labs drawn at closer intervals so you can watch your trends!  (Unless that's part of your program and then Right On!)

**Directlabs.com is a great place to get labs done in the interim, if you are a self pay like me, and have weirdness about asking for them to run multiple of the same labs (within the same year).  Leigh, the lady there, can give you a discount for OH and she can help you with multiple panels and save you some money, if you do not have insurance/lab availability. I knew about this place because she was on the board, and I wish I had utilized her to get my proteins done before a year, but since Sleeved Folk are not "supposed" to have issues with protein, I did not check.  Lesson learned!
