Dry mouth at night?

Ok, so since surgery I have had the most awful dry mouth at night, it does not matter how much I drink during the day. It has gotten progressively worse and now it's at the point where it is actually waking me up b/c I am so uncomfortable.

Anyone else, any advice on how to change it?

I read on here and heard it from a dr as well that dry mouth is normal, you produce less saliva when in ketosis apparently. Take a glass of water to bed? I can't believe my water to bed at night use to be a pepsi, a pepsi to go to bed with, a pepsi to wake up to, I was a pepsi addict. I do notice my teeth feel brittle now though. I think anything sour will get your salivary glands flowing good but not sure how long it will last.

Try goggling a dry mouth and see what it comes up with, I will be interested in hearing more.

I find I have to brush my teeth as soon as I get up to get the dryness off of them, so make sure you give them a good brushing before bed too.

When you're eating a low-carb diet, you retain less fluids.  I wake up with a dry mouth and dry eyes pretty frequently (they eyes being very problematic given my eye issues).  Water, itself, can have a diuretic effect; so,  drinking more before bed will just make you pee more.  You need to up your water consumption across the whole day (that will also help you metabolize fat). I f you are restricting sodium, try being a little less restrictive.

Do you use a CPAP?

I had the same problem...it went away when the air pressure was reduced on my CPAP.

Just a thought...

I had dry mouth bad those first few months too - ugh! I had no idea why though - so ketosis, hmmmmm. It subsided around month 3-4, but yeah, it woke me up too it was so bad.

Thanks for asking this! I was concerned I was dehydrated, I guess this is normal. I will keep increasing my fluids though!

I'm 3 months out and not keeping carbs low enough to be in ketosis but have horrible dry mouth at night as well.  My denist said dry mouth can cause cavities and gum disease.  Its not something to ignore.  I tried OTC Biotene mouth moisturizer spray at bedtime and it didn't work. I got some stuff from my denist that seems to work a better. Its a thick gel and I have to apply two coats of it.

That's the ketosis.

Radical solution: up your carbs. Might affect your weight loss, but would fix the dry mouth.

Less radical solution: Keep a bottle of water by your bed. That will help with the dry mouth AND bump your fluids. Between my bedtime pills and my morning pills I drink 20 oz of water. That has bumped me up above 90 oz a day.
