Gallbladder removal today - advise needed to sleevers w/o gallbladder
Good morning... I am on my way to the hospital in a couple of hours to have my Gallbladder removed. Its full of sludge and stones - and a few stones are lodged in bile ducts. The pain has gotten worse the past few months, attacks more common - so it's gotta go.
This past weekend I started researching life & diet without a gallbladder and any special diets I should follow post-op. BIG mistake! The internet is full of people who had their GB removed and have lots of problems eating post GB removal - biggest problems seems to be (excuse me here) explosive shiz after eating anything with fats dairy or spices. Now I know people with no issues are not posting - only those with issues. So I want to ask you veteran sleevers who had your GB removed post VSG what your experience has been with your diet post GB removal.
Specifically what is your experience with the following:
White meats:chicken, turkey and fish (I currently eat these as my primary proteins along with my shakes)?
Red meats?
Dairy: Milk Cheese, Yougurt, cream?
Other fats: Oils & Butter?
Protein shakes? Any issues here - I still have at least 1 per day...
Spicy foods? mexican and Chili seem to cause problems for lots of people post GB removal.
Any words of advise you care to share? I am hoping this surgery would solve my pain issues not cause new issues. I mean really I don't know how I would survive without most of the items I just listed. I do not want to lose any more weight (I am below goal now and very happy were I am at)
Thanks for your time and advise! Oh and prayers are always welcome here! It's hard to believe they can remove an organ and send you home the same day! Amazing - they said I might be home by 1:00 pm today - surgery is at 7:30 am So when some of you are reading this I might already be gallbladder free!

In the beginning fatty foods will make you run for the bathroom. That effect will subside after a month or two. I have no problems with foods now.

Right after GB surgery all of those things would make me run to the bathroom, but I can't say that it wasn't from my enormous portion sizes at the time. Since my sleeve I can eat all of that stuff with no problem at all, even though I eat pretty high in fat. You should be fine!

The only food that causes me indigestion is pork spareribs and I'm sure it is because of the amount of grease in the ribs. No other foods have bothered me, though I do not eat a lot of greasy foods by choice.
SInce my VSG surgery I have eaten everything you mentioned in your post, without any problems.

Had my gallbladder out in 2004. The worst was in the first few months after its removal. However, it is still my practice that after I eat to not get too far from a bathroom until after I have a bowel movement. It saves me from having that highly uncomfortable problem of being in the car on the way home from a restaurant and worrying I won't make it to the house in time.
I had my gallbladder out about a year and a half prior to my sleeve surgery. I didn't have issues with any food other than ice cream. Fajitas are one of my favorite things, and never had an issue with those or salsa or other spicy stuff.
Ultimately, though, everyone has a different reaction. Mostly, you'll just feel better! Oh, and if no one has mentioned it, be sure to buy some laxative...you won't be able to "push" very well for about a week. That was the best advice I got.
Will be thinking about you today!
