BRAT foods for VSG people?

So, the doctor told me I should follow the BRATdiet for a few days, after my stomach flu experience.  It's made up primarily of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.  I asked if their was a version of this that would work better for bariatric people, and he didn't know :(

I just looked online, and some doctors support the CRAM diet (cereal, rice, apple sauce, and milk), but the only thing on that list that I would want is the milk...

Are their any foods that you found easy to eat after having the stomach  flu?  I'm having G2 right now, but I'm starting to feel a little hungry...

I would think the one thing you would want to stay away from is milk/dairy products when you have the stomach flu. My son just had it and the Dr told us the worst thing you can give someone is dairy as the virus feeds off of it.

Perhaps go with a clear diet for example - broths, miso soup, applesauce, etc...

hope you feel better

 Hi there,

It can also stand for Bannanas, rice, applesauce and tea.  As a VSGer you can pick the ones you can tolerate.  It is for a short time.  I would probably avoid the rice if I was in your situation.  You will need more fluids however and stay away from dairy and fiber for now.

Did you ever actually throw up or just stomach pain?  Refer to your ER visit post for info on what my experience was.  I never threw up.  Just serious pain.  And I don't blame any of this on VSG.  I have always had a sensitive stomach pre-surgery.

You have my sympathy, I'm in the same boat.  I was going to do the same post, so I'm glad you beat me to it.  Big D for about 12 hours, but I'm starting to feel better.  I've had a few cups of tea and some saltines today, so far I'm holding on to them so I think the worst is over.  Maybe I'll try some applesauce with protein powder like in the new post op days.   On the bright side, I lost 4 pounds last night!  I hope you feel better soon!

The BRAT diet is for bulking up the stool when you have diarrhea.  All of the food listed are high in fiber and tend to constipate when taken in high quantities which is why they are given as suggestions when you have diarrhea.  Yogurt with live cultures of lactobacillus is very good also.  It is the only dairy that is recommended when having diarrhea.

Vomiting is a whole other animal.  You starve a vomiting stomach and only give it 1 ouce of clear, uncarbonated liquids every 20 minutes for an hour, if you hold that down, you slowly increase the intake...clear liquids only.  When you have not vomited for 6-8 hours, you can then start taking in solids, but stay away from spicy, high fat and dense foods.

I hope this information helps you.  I wouldn't worry about the protein or messing up your progress.  Stomach bugs usually do not last that long and you should be well on your way again very soon.
